About Delmetria

Writing and reading shouldn't be intimidating to any student, and I make sure it's absolutely not. While it's true that all subjects are vital, English/Language Arts is "the" bridge of communication. So I am committed to building the arch, one word at a time, in what my students generally refer to as #EnglishFury.

My background as a professional journalist for a long list of national publications, copywriter, author, ghostwriter, editor and certified high school English teacher, equips me to prepare students for college and/or to be marketable in today's competitive workforce. During my tutoring sessions, students will:

*Learn to enjoy and appreciate the various elements of writing.
*Demonstrate an understanding of grammar, mechanics and usage to write well-developed content.
*Generate new vocabulary words in the proper context.
*Analyze literary text.
*Spiral technology as a learning tool to enhance research skills.
*Develop discussion and thinking skills that will help students speak, listen and write better.
*Synthesize and apply the techniques and applications of both creative and critical thinking skills to generate new ideas, overcome roadblocks, develop innovative solutions and solve problems.

Contact me today with any questions or concerns you might have, but especially to find out how a partnership with me can mean success in written and verbal communication for your child!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

As a certified teacher in the state of Texas, I use the Common Core standards to effectively plan, organize, and implement relevant instruction that adequately prepares my students for college, career and life. I align the standards to equip my students with forward thinking and progressive ideas so that they are prepared to be successful in any classroom regardless of geography. When students leave my classroom or tutoring sessions, they are well-educated and empowered to take on any writing or reading challenges or be successful on benchmarks.

As a certified teacher in the State of Texas, I am highly trained in general education, Pre-AP and AP lessons to make an impact on students who have to take English to graduate on the high school and college levels. Writing, reading, literature, grammar, vocabulary, structure, analysis, among other topics, is the mixture of ingredients that make up English. With a set of standards outlined by the Texas Education Agency that I am required to teach, I combine these ingredients as creatively and engaging as I can to prepare high school and college students for the real-world. My focus is to prepare them to be a force in today's competitive job market both mentally and skillfully.

Like a carpenter has his tools to build structures, a writer has tools to build upon language. Grammar and mechanics are the roots of turning words into sentences and sentences into stories, regardless of the genre. Teaching grammar is a challenging task, but rewarding in the end. Small bits of editing and revising, punctuation and spelling and structure can easily be spiraled into lessons so inconspicuously that students do not realize they've learned until they see a 90 on a paper that used to say 60.

I am an avid reader. I think everyone should be avid readers. For some, reading comprehension is a daunting task. However, I have learned and developed strategies that can improve reading comprehension. The strategies I teach are effective and proven in helping students better understand word-for-word, line-by-line and from one paragraph to the next.

My students' test scores have improved significantly with the reading strategies that I have taught them. I have developed a system that makes it easy and efficient for students to comprehend what they are reading.

As a certified English/Language Arts & Reading teacher with the State of Texas, I provide weekly tutoring sessions to high school students in preparation for the STAAR exam. I also provide STAAR tutoring to high school children in my home. Finally, as a tutor at a university, as part of their Upward Bound program, I provide STAAR tutoring on weekends throughout the year.

Since middle school I have studied the dictionary, completed and created crossword puzzles and designed word hoards in order to improve my vocabulary. Vocabulary words are a critical element to writing. To that end, I am able to show students how to weave vocabulary into their writing and make it sound authentic instead of manufactured.

A writer's writer, I can shape thoughts into words and create stories, fiction or non-fiction, that are engaging, powerful, informative and creative. I use grammar, literary and rhetorical techniques that make you feel like you're a part of the story. Also, I can make that happen for me or for you, all the while preserving your voice and style. I can craft power across any genre or any industry.

Working with people, I'm patient, a critical factor to engage students of all ages with their work. I allow you to breathe and imagine so you can appreciate the writing and thinking process.
