My goal is to help you understand and grow so well that you don't need me anymore.

There is a gap in my experience from working in higher education for 3 years (2015-2018). Before that, I tutored in Madrid, Spain while working as a culture and language assistant. I'm currently a substitute teacher for Dallas ISD. I would be honored to help you and/or your kid(s) improve and grow in confidence.

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

I spent nine months in Madrid as an assistant teacher in English and science classes. In addition to my time in the classroom, I held private lessons with five students for one hour each per week. That gives me more than 100 hours of private instruction experience in an ESL environment to go with my classroom time. The age range I have worked with are from seven up to twelve.
Grammar

Grammar

Grammar is probably my favorite part of language. It is like advanced mathematics. Unfortunately, I am not as good at math as I am with grammar. I carried a 4.0 through all classes of my major, and since my focus is creative writing, my understanding of grammar isn't limited to what it is, but includes why it is as well as how it creates meaning.

Reading

When I was young I had trouble reading sentences. I did not understand classifications like verbs, nouns, and adjectives, how they related to one another, or why they are necessary. If this sounds like your student, I can help. I completed my English degree at UNT with a 4.0 in the classes of my major.

My degree is in English with a focus on creative writing. The program focuses on understanding different styles of criticism and establishing a foundation of some classics (Shakespeare, Milton, Homer, etc). I have over 100 hours of experience tutoring English.

Literature,

Literature

Literature is about understanding all the things not written, but clearly stated, in these six words: For sale - Baby Shoes. Never worn. When I teach literature, I teach asking questions of the text. A good writer makes you, the reader, work for it. I will help you by expanding your tool box.

SAT Reading,

SAT Reading

The difficulty of the SAT in Reading is in the similarities of words used in answers to words used in the text. I can help your student understand the format of paragraphs and the purpose of word usage to find main ideas and sentences that fit within the writing. I've also worked with ESL students on their standardized tests in Spain, so I have an array of illustrations and examples to help students learn what words are key to the answer.
SAT Writing,

SAT Writing

SAT Writing was my first tutoring subject about eighteen months ago. My student scored a 4 on her test and wanted to improve. I was quite nervous, but gave her all the information I learned in my college writing classes and explained how it worked. She scored a 6, which is a perfect score. I tutored three more students, and they all scored 6's, too. Two of those were ESL, so I possess a strong ability to connect to what the student already understands in order to create a basis for new knowledge.

Writing

I am a writing major, and all students I have tutored for the SAT writing portion have scored 6's. I won the Mary Patchell award as a Senior at UNT for commitment to literary studies and writing. I carried a 4.0 through all classes of my English major, which included both literary criticism and creative writings (fiction, non-fiction, and poetry). My poem 'Stairs' was published in the North Texas Review. I don't feel comfortable brandishing my flags of success, but I am very proud of what I've accomplished so far in my writing career.
