About LIndsey

Let me begin by telling a little about myself, specifically my educational background and history as a teacher. I am a certified EC-6th Grade Teacher specializing in the area of Reading and ESL (English as a Second Language) for kindergarten to fifth grade students. My passion for education developed in High School as I worked as a Teacher's Aid for SCORE! Educational Learning Center. In college, I was actively involved in children's ministry and continued to work at SCORE! seasonally. I have a BA in Spanish with minors in religious studies and history from Centenary College of Louisiana. Upon graduating college, I spent a year abroad teaching 3rd grade in Mexico. After my term ended there, I came back to the United States and earned my EC-6th Grade Teaching Certification through Southern Methodist University. As I was graduating from SMU, I became a reading tutor for kindergarten to second grade students at Sylvan Learning Center. I worked as a center instructor at Sylvan until I earned a full time position at a Dallas charter school as the kindergarten to fifth grade Reading Specialist. I have been at this charter school for four years and am excited to continue my career in a private school in Dallas teaching second grade.

As your child's tutor, I will work specifically to design lessons to improve reading growth in the areas of comprehension, phonics and fluency. I strive to instill a love of learning in your student by creating interactive centers and activities to make reading and learning fun. My educational philosophy has always been to "bridge the intelligence of the mind with the wisdom of the heart." My greatest desire as a tutor with WyzAnt is to use my background as a teacher to help your child flourish as a reader and truly love reading. I hope together we can help your student succeed! I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified EC-6th grade teacher in Texas. I have taught for four years at a local Texas Charter school.

Handwriting

As a reading specialist I also focus on handwriting. In kindergarten to second grade we focus on building vocabulary using, spelling and high frequency words. Then applying nouns, adjectives and adverbs and making complete sentences. As the child progresses I focus on phonics and letter sound association to help the child spell unknown words. I am a certified EC-6th grade teacher in Texas. I have taught for four years at a local Texas Charter school.

Phonics

In phonics we practice letter sound association with songs, chants, and hands on centers. First we focus on continuous letter sounds (i.e. m, a, s, c) then those that stop (i.e. d, l, P, T). Once scholars understand the alphabet and their sounds we focus on vowel sounds: a,e,i,o and u. We advance onto vowel combinations (i.e. ou, oi, oy) then to blends (ch, th, sh). This helps scholars blend words to read fluently and gives them a strategy to write and read unknown words. I am a certified EC-6th grade teacher in Texas. I have taught for four years at a local Texas Charter school.
