As an Adjunct Professor at Texas Wesleyan University, I taught three levels of Spanish. My academic credentials include a Master of Arts degree in National Security Affairs / Latin America Studies from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School and graduation with honors in Spanish at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA. In order to further my Spanish proficiency, I attended the Don Quixote Institute of Languages Superintensivo Program in Guanajuato, Mexico.

My strong passion for teaching Spanish to all age groups has resulted in my integrating multiple complementary techniques to reach the student. Through incorporating a wide variety of materials to aid in the learning process, I make learning a foreign language less intimidating. I want my students to have both a solid foundation and the comfort to enjoy Spanish.

My professional credentials in the Spanish language span three decades. As an Air Force officer in the 1980s, I was a specialist in Latin American intelligence, performing English-to-Spanish and Spanish-to-English translation services. I received a Master's degree in Latin America Studies from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, and I graduated with honors from the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA. Later I attended the Don Quixote Institute of Languages, Guanajuato, Mexico, attaining "advanced C1" level in their superintensivo course. During the past decade, I have been teaching all levels of Spanish in several private high schools and at a university. My teaching style includes a mix of technical grammar comprehension and immersion drills. I integrate a variety of techniques (visual aids, sound aids, animation, hands-on, verbal and nonverbal activities) to ensure complete understanding of the specific concepts.

Excellent Spanish Tutor

Cynthia has been my son's 8th grade Spanish tutor for almost 6 months. She is an excellent tutor. She is friendly and patient. She answers all of his questions. She is enthusiastic about Spanish. She encourages and compliments my son on his work. He enjoys working with her. He feels much more confident in his Spanish class after he has worked with her. She goes over his assignments and projects, making sure that all is correct. She is always well prepared and has additional review questions for him. I would highly recommend Cynthia. We are so happy to have found her.

Wonderful Help

Cynthia is helping my 11-year old with her middle school Spanish class. I don't know what we'd do without her support. It's been invaluable. Cynthia is very good at interacting with my pre-teen and my daughter enjoys working with her.

Knowledgeable and Patient

Cynthia is the best. I truly mean she is the perfect fit for our family. Our son has been seeing Cynthia for many years. She is enthusiastic, but calm. She has the ability to “be cool” but still get the most out of the session. She has supported us through Spanish 1, 2 and now 3. We have also started our daughter with Cynthia. We appreciate her commitment and adore having her weekly for Spanish sessions! Thank you Cynthia!!

Cynthia is an EXCELLENT teacher. She has a great way of explaining the language with easy to remember acronyms, as well as fun sayings to help with remembering. She is extremely thorough and pushes you to get outside of your comfort zone and not be afraid to use what you're learning. You don't have to worry about trying to figure out what you want to go over because she is highly prepared with boards already prepped when you log on. She is also knowledgeable with using the Wyzant platform, which is very helpful. I highly recommend her, especially if you are an adult struggling to learn a new language. It is seamless and enjoyable.

Great tutor, highly recommended!

My daughter and I are so glad to have found Cynthia! She is organized and comes prepared for each session, and is great at explaining grammar and usage. Also, she is patient and encouraging. My daughter fell in love with Spanish after taking Cynthia's lessons. After one year of her lessons, my daughter skipped a grade in Spanish at her school! We would highly recommend Cynthia to anyone who wants to make learning Spanish easy and fun!

Very knowledgeable and patient tutor for my Son

My son, after taking 8 years of Spanish, still struggled his Freshman year in his Advanced Spanish class. Part of the issue was that his teacher went too fast for him to fully grasp new concepts. Then we found Cynthia and what a difference! She was very patient and took time to go through each item he was having difficulties with. He took every session via thier online platform and it was super easy for him (and helped him stay comfortable so he was more open to learning). Unfortunately, I didn't look for a tutor until the last quarter but the limited sessions were still enough for him to do well on the exams - several grades better in fact. I just wish we had found Cythnia sooner so he could have truly enjoyed his Spanish class this year. We will continue to use Cynthia through the summer and into next year and I would highly recommend Cynthia to anyone.
