I am a biomedical scientist! I have advanced degrees in Biomedical Science (Ph.D.) and Engineering (M.S.). I know a great deal about biology -- I did cancer research in my doctoral studies, took courses that dealt with many facets of human biology and physiology, and have experience teaching Biology and Anatomy & Physiology college courses. I also have knowledge of basic science and mathematics, thanks to a rigorous engineering education in undergraduate and graduate school.
The sciences are eminently practical and I use this fact as a philosophical guide for tutoring. Having obtained advanced degrees, I have a great deal of respect for knowledge. However, tutoring may involve questions of why something is important in addition to the matter itself. I find that dealing with practical questions -- homework or study guides often provide these -- can help students engage with academic material. I feel that this approach, which has served me well in a teaching environment, helps students realize the importance of the more conceptual and intellectual matters of science. Students come from diverse backgrounds and bring a variety of educational and life experiences into a learning environment. Discussing the broader issues at hand through a practical example can reveal if students are missing a final conceptual leap or a more fundamental principle.
A deeper understanding is my goal, and that understanding is built on concrete foundations. Knowledge is valuable, and useful knowledge is invaluable. Hi!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught college courses in Biology and Anatomy and Physiology, and greatly enjoy doing so. I obtained a Ph.D. researching cancer biology, which involves knowing all about how cells grow. Cancer happens when cell growth gets out of control. Figuring out what went wrong requires one to know what should be happening. In addition, I took many courses that dealt with human biology--cell biology, hormone action, biochemistry, etc.
I have taught lecture and laboratory Anatomy & Physiology courses at the college level, and greatly enjoyed doing so. In graduate school, the laboratory in which I did research was actually located in the Physiology Department. I took the same course on human physiology as medical students, plus I attended weekly physiology seminars. As a master's student, I spent several semesters as a teaching assistant for a Quantitative Physiology course. I held weekly office hours in which students in the course would come get help with lecture material and homework questions. Students gave me high scores in evaluations, and I think everyone learned a great deal. I know I enjoyed it and I think they did, too.
I have Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Biomedical Engineering, and any engineering student does a fair bit of math. I took several calculus classes, so I had to have a good foundation in more basic mathematics. Math is one of those skills that are invaluable in life, and really is something that anyone can learn. I prefer to take a methodical approach, showing how each step works in order to move on to another.
