Hi :) My name is Shayling and I have three years of private tutoring experience. I've tutored in children's and adult's art from helping understand basic art concepts to helping construct art portfolios for college (message me for a link to my art portfolio if interested). I've also tutored in SAT and ACT practice as well as Chinese, homework assistance, college essay prep, and english literature analysis/comprehension. I am currently a Cognitive Neuroscience and Art double major at Loyola University of Chicago but am taking a gap year in Dallas, Texas to work on a start-up company.
I was born in China (Therefore I am bilingual in Mandarin Chinese and English). When I grew up in New Jersey until college came around; that's when I packed my bags and moved here to Chicago to attend college. Now here's some fun facts about myself: In 2007 when I was about 9 years old, I performed piano at Carnegie Hall and won an award. Shortly after, I struggled to figure out my true passions while simultaneously dealing with quite a lot of unfortunate events, and therefore rounded a corner to depression. Instead of letting depression drag me down, I used it as a fuel to push me towards success. I started writing my first novel when I was 14, signed a contract with PenguinGroup publishing company when I was 15. Not only am I passionate in writing, but I am also passionate in art. I completed my art portfolio for college a couple years ago and that art portfolio managed to get me into Art Institute of Chicago with a 54k scholarship.
I have an affinity for the arts as well as human expression. The chaotic emotions I've felt at one point in my life as a child allowed me to direct my entire being into improving myself as not only an individual but also as a contributor to society. So for a while I asked myself "what are you going to do with the talents you were given?" That's when I decided I wanted to share what I have. In my sophomore year of high school I volunteered to teach Sunday school at my church for a year, and during my senior year of high school I spent the second semester teaching art at "Art Collaborations" in Princeton, NJ. In the summer of 2016, I spent the entire summer teaching English at MTGK Institute in Texas. In addition, I've tutored privately for three years now, working with kids who are prodigies as well as kids who have mental impairment. Recently, I've started working for ABA instructional consultants where I work with families (especially those with children who have autism) to analyze and help correct flawed behaviors. In addition, I help to establish a higher level of self-awareness in children/teens/adults with different forms of mental impairment.
Professional experience aside, I have many hobbies that further shaped my skills. I spent most of my life engaging in theatre. Acting and Singing has always been a passion of mine. But due to traditional parents, I never had the change to pursue them. So in secret, I joined the school choir, joined the school play, and tried out for "The Voice". Furthermore, I supported my younger sister (11 years old) in her desire to act, and recently she landed a role in "The Americans" TV show on FX. You see, I am a walking ball of passion, expression, and desire. I long to make a difference in the world. And by doing so, I start with the little steps like helping each and every one of you. I hope to not only assist but also to inspire each and every life I touch. An ancient Greek philosopher named Plutarch once said "what we achieve inwardly will change outer reality." I believe very much so in that statement. And I hope I am given a chance to help positively change every individual's realities no matter how small or big the impact might be.
Feel free to contact me for tutoring lessons or anything else, even if it's just to have someone to talk to :)
Shay is amazing. Our son is a math geek but we want to help him expand his interests. He also is a deep thinker so we know for the art lessons to take it will also have to be technically interesting. Shay first "interviewed" us to make sure we were serious about art and to ask about our needs. For our first lesson Shay was able to connect with our son and show him a perspective about art as related to geometric forms. I'm sure if he had a different interest she would have related that to art instead. I had friends who attended art class at FIT and Parson's in NYC and his first lesson seemed equivalent to what you would get there, only personalized. Her teaching style seems to blend how to think about art, technique, and the personality of the student. It was a superb first experience and our son really enjoyed it.James, 1 lesson with Shayling
