I have two main passions in my life: writing, and martial arts. These are the two primary subject areas in which I wish to provide tutoring. I also happen to have been an "A" student in physics and mathematics at Rice University, so I can tutor in these subjects as well, especially if combined with one of the two primary subject areas.
In martial arts, my approach might better be referred to as "private lessons" rather than tutoring, since what I offer is to teach the full 108-step Yang-style Taiji form, with all the surrounding Kungfu knowledge, energy work etc. This is a complete system for self-defense, but will also help students in other types of classes to develop their skills and power to a much higher level and to understand the internal secrets common to all martial arts.
This Taiji form can provide the basis of both health and self-defense over a person's entire lifetime. It is good for any age, as the Chinese sources make it clear that even a 70-year old beginner has the ability to become a master. Diligent Taiji students are said to add many years of health and longevity to their lives.
To prepare for providing these lessons, I have studied Kungfu and Taiji intensely for the last 12 years, primarily with grandmaster James Harkens of the Wujido Institute. To these lessons I have added my own in-depth study of several other Taiji masters as well as the classic Chinese sources.
In my other main subject area--writing--I am an almost full-time novelist at this point in my life though I have not yet submitted my first work for publication (I will do this in 2013). Writing novels has been my true dream since college days, but I never actively pursued it as a career until the last two years. Before that, however, I wrote hundreds of pieces in business, as well as publishing a few articles in peer-reviewed psychology journals. I have often been told that my style is clear, organized, well-written ... and occasionally a bit poetic.
On a personal note, I am 60 years old, but my health age is much younger. I have two wonderful daughters.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
