About Adam

I believe that every student should have the opportunity to have an excellent education. Sometimes, whole group class sessions don't provide the best environment for students to show what they know. But I find that when you sit down for some one-on-one tutoring, the student shines. A little bit of focused attention, concrete feedback, and specific praise can make all the difference.

I have taught elementary school for three years in Dallas ISD and one year in Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD. Between my participation in Dallas ISD’s Alternative Certification program and Teach for America's leadership training, I am accustomed to frequent observations, instructional coaching sessions, and high-pressured professional reviews. My training has given me an eye for making data-driven instructional decisions, using backward-planning techniques in lesson design, and differentiation in lesson execution to suit the needs of my English Language Learning students.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

For four years, I taught Spanish and English to elementary school students as a certified Bilingual teacher. In 2014-2015, my students averaged 1.87 years of reading growth in English and Spanish combined. In small group instruction, I prepare carefully to help students utilize academic vocabulary to think deeply in reading comprehension and mathematics.

Elementary Math

For 4 years, I taught Bilingual education as a certified EC-6 Bilingual Generalist. In Fall 2015, 100% of my students passed their end of semester math exam developed by the district. In small group instruction, I prepare carefully to help students utilize academic vocabulary to think deeply in algebraic problem solving while making use of other visual strategies as needed to assist students who struggle to grasp a particular concept.

English

Since reading has remained one of my central pastimes since I was young, English comprehension and grammar has come naturally to me. I scored at the 95th percentile in the verbal sections of both the SAT (740) and the GRE (165). Recently, I received a perfect score (170) on the Verbal portion of the GRE. I love vocabulary, and I love the process of analyzing text.

STAAR

I taught STAAR Spanish Reading and Writing and STAAR Math to a two-way dual language class in Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD. I always worked to make the learning process interactive and compelling, even when the test-taking strategies did not seem that stimulating to students at first. Learning should be a pleasant experience, even when prepping for a test.
