University of Pittsburgh (Mathematics)
Hello! My name is Max, and I am a very experienced math tutor looking to help anybody who seems to be running into a mental wall against math. Mathematics can seem to be a very complex field of study and very overwhelming at times, but I'm here to help. It is important to try many different teaching styles, and I will find the right style that fits you. We can tackle math one problem at a time to build a solid foundation of knowledge. It's important to build a solid base of knowledge because all math builds on previous information, and if one concept is not grasped, it will continually appear and prevent further understanding of additional topics.
I have been tutoring students for over ten years, initially starting with helping friends with homework and progressing to paid tutoring of fellow students. I can help in any math field that is needed - from elementary math, to basic algebra, to calculus, and I have tutored students with varying ages - from 6 to 55 years old. In college, I was an undergraduate teaching assistant at the University of Pittsburgh for two semesters in courses titled Applied College Algebra and Algebra & Trigonometry. This position required me to hold recitations once a week for an hour as well as hold private office hours for three hours a week. In addition, I offered private tutoring to any student that entered the math assistance center where I tutored, and I met with three different students multiple times outside of my classroom responsibilities.
During the 2012-2013 school year, I worked in an at-risk high school as a math teacher in Colorado. It was the experience of a lifetime, and I have learned numerous new techniques to help students conquer their fear of math - including patience! Relating to students has always been my strong point and I offer a youthful energy that can make math fun again!
During the summer of 2014, I taught trigonometry and algebra 1 at De La Salle High School in New Orleans. It was a fantastic experience to help students with unique learning styles and I highly enjoyed getting back in the classroom.
I currently live and work in Dallas as a High School Math Curriculum Writer for Edmentum, writing online math curriculum that is used in all 50 states, mainly through the common core.

Max really helped calm my math related fears and broke problems down for me so that I could really see what the question was asking. His confidence in my abilities made me feel at ease and much more positive about conquering the quantitative section on the GRE!
Great first lesson. My daughter was against the idea of a tutor and Max did a great job breaking the ice and earning her trust. Looking forward to her next lesson.
We have been using a different tutor and for whatever reason my daughter's grades in AP Calculus continued to slip. After even just one tutor session with Max she got 100! She continues to improve and really likes Max.
I would have never gotten an A in my Calculus 2 class without Max. Not only is he extremely helpful and patient, but he empowered me with the confidence I needed to get through the course. After each lesson with him I felt significantly less stressed about the subject, and my grade in the class clearly reflects his effectiveness as a tutor. Math is one of my weakest subjects, and Calculus 2 is probably the last math class I will ever take, but part of me wishes I was taking more math so I could continue working with Max. I would highly recommend him to anyone struggling with any level of math.
Finding a Pre-calc and Physics tutor for my son was a daunting experience. We had tried several tutors and either my son couldn't relate to them or they did not teach the technique in a way his teacher would accept. I am so thankful to WyzAnt and Max for coming to the rescue. Max came to our house to work with my son for his first session. As soon as the session was concluded, my son said, "I really relate to Max, mom. He explains things in a way I completely understand. He is so patient and makes me feel at ease with my questions." Max has worked with my son numerous times over the last 6 months and now helps my other son, as well. We strongly recommend Max and WyzAnt!
Max knows how to assess the needs and zero in on how to present the material in an easy to learn way.
Max really helped me understand calculus. He explained it in a way that made it very clear and make sense.I will use be using Max again in the near future!
I walked into my first appointment with a mix of emotions. I wanted to do well on the GRE, but I was very nervous meeting my new tutor. When meeting Max, I instantly knew he could help me with my goal. He was energetic, positive, and patient. I have met with him a numerous amount of times and continue to enjoy every session. He even made me look forward to studying and learning more each time. I highly recommend him to any and all students. He is extremely knowledgeable and understanding!
He is a great tutor. He helped me out a lot. He is very patient, helpful, and a great tutor. I enjoyed working with him. We went over percentage, opposites, operations, equations, inequalities, and problem solving.
Max has truly helped my son in math. He has shown him how to understand the math section of the ACT and his score increased. We also see higher scores on his math tests. We are super pleased and would recommend Max for tutoring.
We have seen tremendous improvement and my son now maintains A or high B average in class. We just received his ACT and he went up another point and received the score he needed. Max was a great tutor that my son can relate to. We're very happy!
Max came for the first time to tutor my daughter on Geometry. Normally an excellent math student, my daughter was struggling a little and not receiving very clear instruction from her teacher. Max and my daughter hit the ground running, having a very focused session. She told me after that, "Wow, Max gave great explanations! I really understand so much more now." I can't ask much better than that. Max was also personable and professional.
Max is incredibly responsive, accommodating for scheduling and a true specialist in his field. He has been invaluable to my daughter. I highly recommend him with no reservation.
I was struggling with my calc 1 university class. Max quickly whipped me into shape and gave me the confidence to succeed in the class. I highly recommend Max for any math needs as he is very knowledgeable and has a very clear teaching method.
Max has made my son feel very comfortable with pre-calculus. My son has a weak background in math and Max managed to break it down and bring it to his level. He doesn't make my son feel uncomfortable when he doesn't understand something. Max definitely has a gift working with students. My son is very shy and doesn't like to ask questions in class. Max knows how to get the material across to my son. I would recommend him to any student.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I taught a specialized ACT Math preparation course in Colorado at an at-risk high school during spring of the 2013 school year. I have extensive knowledge of not only the topics covered on the exam, but also specific test taking skills for the ACT. With a tight window of needing to answer one question per minute to finish the exam, students must learn how to read the questions and take shortcuts to solve long, tricky problems.
I have taught two different sections of Algebra 2 during the 2012 school year. I worked with students from all backgrounds to help them with all topics, from solving basic equations to polynomials and quadratics.
With all math classes, especially Algebra 2, I try to show students multiple problem solving methods so that they can find the method that best suits them. Whether it's graphing, using specific formulas, or using mental math, students should have the opportunity to find the method that works best for them.
