About Ian

Dear Prospective Student,

My teaching experience spans over 20 years; first as a college student-teacher at Florida State University and then as a certified professional teacher. I graduated from Florida State University with a bachelors of arts in International Relations, Political Science, and a minor in French. I taught World History, AP Social Studies, Exploratory Foreign Languages, Reading, Math, English, & Science in private, charter, and public middle schools as a certified instructor since graduating in 1998 up to the present. I tutored adults, college students, & secondary and middle school students. Subjects tutored by category include Social Sciences - History, Economics, Political Science, Psychology. Natural Sciences - Earth Science, Geology, & Biology. Mathematics - Geometry & Algebra. Languages - Spanish, Arabic, French, and specialized pronunciation lessons for many languages. I am able to read the Latin, Greek, Cyrillic, & the various Arabic based alphabets. I received a Masters in Education from Texas Christian University in 2009 while I worked as an Exploratory Languages teacher at McLean 6th Grade Center in Fort Worth. In addition to teaching, I designed course curriculums and directed the Exploratory Languages Department. My skills-set and knowledge base are not just a product of what was needed to obtain my degrees and certifications: I built my knowledge-base and kept it expanding by electing to take over 100 college credit hours over the years in the humanities, the natural sciences, linguistics, and the social sciences. Perhaps most importantly, I am a trained and skilled instructor in the conceptualization of information for maximum comprehension and retention.

I take particular joy in tutoring, helping my students meet their needs and learning objectives. I will modify my combined pedagogy skill, knowledge, and experience to suit your learning style and personality. I will help you internalize the purpose of the material. That will help with retention as it connects learning familiar or personal experience and background-knowledge. One of the best ways to accomplish this is with the socratic method: i.e. open question and answer environment. Fostering a casual good natured interaction and respectful sense of humor go along ways in meeting learning-needs. I look forward to helping you.

Sincerely,

Ian M.Ed.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I studied anthropology as an undergraduate student as part of an elective program.

I tutored fellow college students in the subject matter.

I was invited to join an excavation in Nicaragua by a fellow in the anthropology department at Florida State University.

I freelanced educational tours at the Giza step to tourists explaining the structure, symbolism, purpose, and method of construction of the pyramids. Tours included a lesson in the socio-political conditions and culture of Egyptian society at the time of construction as evidenced by archaeological finds.

Arabic

I have 20 years of teaching experience, which included tutoring Arabic to children and adults: reading, writing, and grammar.

I studied the Arabic language in lower and higher institutions of learning. I was immersed in Arabic learning programs at the Al-Bayan school in Kuwait.

I meet federal government level standards in Modern Standard Arabic.

English

I have grant award writing skills and over 30 hours in English and literature. I would like to be of assistance. I also speak French and know Latin, which are the sources of roughly 60% of English vocabulary. I can teach he student some constructs to help infer or deduce the meaning of unknown terms.

Geography

Hi. I have over 10 years of teaching: History, geography, people and places, and world civilizations. I taught Highschool, middle school, and college. I have a valid principal and teaching certificate in the state of Texas.

Government & Politics

I am a political science and international affairs graduate from Florida State University. I also have over 20 years of teaching experience and a master in education.

Political Science

I am qualified to teach Political Science because I have a bachelor of arts in the subject from Florida State University and because I was chosen by the department head to tutor. The reason I was told I was chosen was my excellent grasp of the subject matter and my first-hand observation of judicial and legislative functions of the British system and the European Union. I also earned first hand study to the judicial political operations Kuwait and Egypt. The purpose of these internships was to deepen my understanding of comparative politics.

Proofreading

In addition to having taken courses in literary and professional writing, for which the graduate level set standards of peer-reviewed research, I excelled in my paper writing. My reputation for good writing spread and my peers often sought me to proof read their work prior to submission. In fact a first year law school student solicited my help to proof read his first legal brief. I felt that the perfect grade that he received correlated strongly with my proofreading.

My written request, one of many, for a grant succeeded in awarding funds to Sarasota School of Arts & Sciences; where I taught Social Studies in 2002-2003.

Reading

I'm a devoted teacher with excellent communication skills and over ten years experience in reading and reading related instruction and tutoring. I taught and tutored age groups ranging from 8 to adult learners. I organized an intensive needs-based tutoring program at McLean 6th Grade Center that yielded measurably better, higher student performance.

Social Studies

I taught AP social studies. I taught Western Civilization. I have a degree in International Affairs and Political Science. I have taken psychology and sociology courses. I tutored while I was a student.

Spanish

Hi, I have experience college -tutoring Spanish. I also taught it in school. I read, write, and speak the other three main Romance languages: French, Italian, and Portuguese. I also know some Latin and Latin grammar.

TOEFL

I have over twenty years of experience employing a variety of effective methods in the instruction of English to primary and second-language learners. My experience acquiring foreign languages allows me to deliver better targeted instruction. I have an academic record of an impeccable, grammatically correct command of the English language.

World History

As an international relations and world politics major and foreign affairs servant, I have ample background and knowledge to assist a student their needs in this subject matter.

Writing

I majored and successfully performed in a field that required the ability to write clear and grammatically correct research papers. I am also an instructor certified in teaching Language Arts.
