About Monica

My lessons are motivating and fun and I enjoy seeing my students progress from day to day. I am a believer in putting some practice in, consistently, for best results.

I am a University of North Texas School of Music graduate, and currently, I am a Music teacher teaching K-6 and high school students.

I have taught a broad range of students including youth and adults, beginner to advanced. I have taught singers wanting success in the music industry and have prepped others for competitions. I teach classical, jazz, and rock piano wrapped up with composition and theory. On a lighter note, I can encourage a beginner pianist/singer if they have focus and the desire to learn.

My performance experiences are solo gigs with my original music at the North Texas Music and San Diego Women's' Festival and intimate showcases at local cafes. I've performed “The Mikado” with the Garland Civic Theater, a taste of musical theater! During my UNT days, my band “Treehouse” enjoyed gigs at Club Dada, Avenue Cafe, Club Clearview, and Denton's Main Event.

Currently, I am the lead singer in two gigging bands in Dallas.
I'm also the Vocal director in a progressive rock project where we will press a CD this summer.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Piano

I studied Classical Piano most of my life. I studied Piano Performance at Booker T Washington High school for the Performing Arts in Dallas, TX. I studied Classical Piano at UNT and became comfortable learning chord progressions to contemporary music.
I started writing music soon after and have performed in festivals and music venues in Denton and Dallas. I am a certified Music educator with lots of experience teaching many age and skill levels.
Having the correct technique in playing piano will create artistry in the music played.

Songwriting

It helps to understand basic Music theory as you craft your song. It also helps to work on the keyboard to choose the chords and melody lines that interest you.
With just a few chords, you can create a nice accompaniment to your ideas.
Creating an outline for your song will help start focus the creative process.
Lyrics are a beautiful way to add paint to your tune...it's poetry.
With some tools under your belt, the musician can write a song and feel success!

Voice (Music)

Training the Voice is tuning up an instrument. It's a discovery of sound. The mechanics of singing should be explored: Breathing from your diaphragm, singing with an open tone, posture, and even creating texture to fit the Vocal style. I trained in the Classical style at UNT and this has made it easy to master the other contemporary styles. Picking songs that work on learning the basic vocal technique is important and the warm-ups focus on skills to be understood.
Vocal performance is exciting and vibrant when your whole body is incorporated to create resonance and zing!
