Although I have learned much in school, much of what I know is self-taught, above and beyond academics. Since I have always been fascinated by the learning process, I have always enjoyed working with teaching others and helping them learn (also by teaching themselves) so that they can be as independent as possible. For example, I went for my Revit Architecture 2012 Associate Certification. Because I was able to figure out the structure of the material of the exam, and how to study for it, I got a 97% on the exam. And I am NOT one of those that can just read material once and remember it really well off by heart! It is those same techniques, and other similar, that I can work with anyone who is interested.
Although I was formally trained in architecture, life took me on many other paths - graphic design, marketing, business (I owned my own food retail delivery business for 4 years) - I wore many different hats that had nothing to do with school. So naturally much of it was self-taught, and so since I need to do all this in order to make money, I always had to figure out how to shorten the learning curve. This challenged me to how I thought and learned. And it is from that which I can give you the benefit of my knowledge. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Along with Photoshop and InDesign, I have used Adobe Illustrator extensively because it has certain characteristics that cannot be found in the other two softwares. Not only can I teach Illustrator, but I can teach you how to look for answers every time you reach a challenge, so that you can learn how to develop your knowledge and skills independently over time.
I have been using Adobe Photoshop almost since it first came out in 1988 for the Macintosh computer. Although I admit I am not a majordomo pro like those who use it "24/7", I have used it sufficiently enough that I can teach it to beginners, and I can also show them how to look for answers online if they are having difficulty with something. I can also show them how to design things such as for websites since I am also proficient in website building (not coding).
I have a B.Arch from McGill University, Montreal, Canada, I graduated as a Shaver Scholar (top 8 in my class, won travelling scholarship). I have done architecture, design, business, etc. so view architecture from a very broad general perspective. I am now going for my Master of Science in Green Building from the San Francisco Institute of Architecture to have a broader knowledge of environmental design.
