I have more than 10 years experience in teaching ESL in a wide spectrum of settings, including Japan, Mexico, and the US. Most recently, I have been teaching adjunct at Collin College in Plano, Texas. I am proficient in both Japanese and Spanish. During my career I have encountered students from a wide range of backgrounds and an infinite variety of needs. My experience covers all age and skill groups, from young children to adults. I have also spent time working with deaf, blind, and special needs students. Not only am I well-versed in the workings of language and the teaching of the 4 language skills, I am also sensitive to individual student's needs. Years of experience have provided me with an arsenal of activities and ideas as well as the flexibility to quickly adapt to any classroom situation. I believe strongly in cultivating a communicative, student-centered environment. However, I understand well the need to be able to develop and follow a set curriculum.
I received an MA in ESL as well as an TESOL Academic certificate from University of North Texas in December 2010. Three semesters of my graduate career were spent teaching and studying at the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico in Toluca, Mexico as part of the Duel Masters Program.
Having lived in foreign countries, I have an intimate understanding of what its like to become oriented to daily life, which goes far beyond mere language. I believe this experience helps me empathize with students' needs and be more sensitive to cultural understanding. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
