About Emily

I am a full-time online tutor with over 10 years of experience. I am one of the top 5 tutors nationwide on Wyzant, logging hundreds of hours of tutoring every month.

I specialize in pre-nursing, particularly the TEAS and HESI exams and prerequisite coursework. If you are looking for guidance and support as you work to get into nursing school (and beyond), I am here for you! I have exceptional knowledge of the “ins-and-outs” of this process and love to make the process less stressful for my students!

Nursing programs are academically, mentally, and emotionally rigorous. They require students to know, understand, and memorize massive amounts of material in a very short time. I do everything I can to prepare my students ahead of time for this experience. I work with my students on understanding critical concepts related to nursing, and help them build their prerequisite learning experiences around the knowledge they will ultimately need. This includes note-taking, organization, and studying habits, as well as foundational understandings related to anatomy, physiology, and microbiology.

I also work with many other standardized exams. I have years of experience in ACT, SAT, GED, ASVAB, PRAXIS, TSI, and many others!

I believe that when someone seeks a tutor, they are seeking not only knowledge, but also comprehensive guidance for their study. I focus my students on how to study as well as providing the knowledge and detail of their subject area. I write most of my own curriculum, and adapt my materials to individual needs.

My biggest goal as a tutor is to make my students feel as if the work they must complete is easy. I seek knowledge and understanding of material, rather than memorization. I work with my students to understand baseline concepts in a simple, efficient manner. I then focus on applying those understandings to more advanced work.

I believe tutoring can be an essential part of a student's education. Any student may excel at any subject given the right tools and guidance. My method of tutoring directly reflects this belief. The ultimate tutoring situation is one in which I can not only provide information to the students but also resources in which they may find their own information and become academically independent.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

The Math section of the ACT Exam is extremely complex, as it involves material from multiple different math subject areas.

I focus my ACT Math lessons on two things:

1) completing the problems on the page and ensuring an understanding of necessary steps to complete for each type of problem.
2) rebuilding essential fundamental skills that make up the problems, ensuring students have all necessary skill sets to execute more complicated problems

Developing fundamental and advanced skill sets for execution of the ACT leads to improved test scores, as well as a more comprehensive understanding in current math classes.

Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary Education is extremely important. This is the time when students learn the basic skills that will set up the rest of their education. I have worked with Elementary (k-6) students in Math, Reading, Writing, Phonics and Spelling. I evaluate students specific weaknesses and create a customized lesson plan. This makes learning not only fun and interesting, but also targets the areas each student needs most, and avoids wasting precious time where they are not struggling. I love working with Elementary students because they are at their learning peak, and they grow right in front of my eyes!

ISEE

I work regularly with all levels and subjects tested on the ISEE. The structure of the ISEE requires not only subject knowledge, but also advanced critical reasoning and test taking strategy. I work with my ISEE students on understanding the format of the exams, and developing a strategy specific to each section. As we work through these strategies together, I am able to identify specific areas where they may need to strengthen their knowledge or skill. When I notice an area that needs improvement, I provide structured instruction and practice to ensure that they can proceed accurately. Studying for the ISEE also provides a wonderful platform for students to advance their study skills, organization, and critical thinking!

Microbiology

I work regularly with nursing and pre-nursing students in Microbiology courses. I find this material fascinating, and love to help students organize this complex class in a manner that makes it easier for them to study and master the material!

Pharmacology

I am a nursing/pre-nursing tutor with extensive experience in nursing Pharmacology. A strong understanding of Pharmacology is not only essential to making it through nursing school- but is also the single biggest aspect of a nurse’s day to day career. Pharmacology is the most failed class in nursing school, and is one of the most stressful classes nursing students take. Pharmacology classes move very quickly and require memorization of hundreds of little details.

My aim as a Pharmacology tutor is to help my students understand the broad concepts and how they fit together, making it easier to apply and remember the material. In addition to addressing questions and frustrations as they arise in class, I work with students on developing a thorough understanding of the following concepts:

*What is the nursing process for giving medication, and how can it be streamlined so that you do not have to memorize a new process every time you learn a new drug?
*What are the big groups of drugs, and why are they grouped the way they are?
*What is a “mechanism of action” (this is the specific physiology of how a medication affects the body), and how can we streamline our understanding of these mechanisms to make them easier to remember and adapt drug to drug?
*Dosage calculations, IV drip calculations, reconstitution solution equations

Study Skills

School support (or study skills) is one of my very favorite types of tutoring! The foundation of a students success is based on these skills, and it is imperative that students acquire and sharpen them. Study skills include taking effective notes, organizing information, completing tasks and assignments on time, and maintaining a healthy study schedule. As a school support tutor, I work with students to stay on schedule, complete work accurately and on time, and retain information. I help students in the specific areas they are struggling academically, as well as monitoring their overall progress and instilling healthy and efficient study habits.
It never ceases to amaze me how much more students enjoy school (and even homework) when they are organized, and know how to stay on track!

TEAS

My TEAS/HESI program involves a combination of live online classes and private tutoring. Classes focus on the “lecture-heavy” aspects of material. Preparing for these exams begins with intensive lectures focused on key aspects of material. After completing a particular class, students are able to review their notes and practice material to determine areas where they need more help or clarification. This then allows us to spend our private lesson time zoning into these specific areas of concern, rather than spending most of our time on overviews and lectures. Classes are billed at a discounted rate versus private tutoring.

Students can register for classes individually according to their schedule, and the time frame in which they wish to prepare for the exam (how quickly they want to learn material). Once you sign up for a class, you are sent printable lecture notes for that class. I lecture over the material in the notes with a focus on specific understandings required on the exam. I also introduce important strategies and thinking patterns that further ensure success on the exam. Students can add information, notes, or helpful add-ons to their lecture packet. I provide a checklist of needed classes to help my students keep track of what they need to learn.

Students who complete a combination of classes and private lessons have remarkable success in comparison to private tutoring alone. I have worked with TEAS/HESI for over 10 years, and this formula truly drives exceptional results for all of my students.
I currently have a two week wait list for new students to begin in private lessons. However, students can begin their classes immediately, which will allow time to review material and find areas of weakness to cover in lessons.

I am a full-time tutor, and one of the top 5 tutors (nationwide) on Wyzant. I spend most of my time working with the TEAS and HESI entrance exams, putting hundreds of hours per month into teaching this specific content. I am one of very few tutors across the country who truly specializes in all sections of these exams, and teaches precise strategies and content to ensure success. I have my own curriculum that features the most important aspects of the testing material. I send 10-15 students per month to the TEAS/HESI, and also take the exams myself periodically. This allows me to keep an accurate scope of the test, and adjust my curriculum constantly. It also allows me to focus on areas of greatest importance so that we get the most points out for the time we put in. Each of these things is an amazing advantage to my students! Over the past 10 years, I have extensively studied the format used on the TEAS. I work with my students on understanding exactly how questions are written, the thought process required, how to manage time limits, and how to effectively use the scratch paper.

If you are serious about making huge improvements to your pre-nursing exam scores, and can commit to my program, you will get where you need to go! Most of my students score way beyond the score they want and are subsequently admitted into nursing school.

Brilliant and supportive tutor. I highly recommend Emily

I studied for the TEAS test using multiple textbooks, but I still could not get my score improve. I started working with Emily on a daily basis two weeks before the test and as a result my score significantly improved and I could not be happier. I struggled specifically with the science section and Emily helped me understand the most important aspects of the material. She also taught me various te
