About Albert

I have been tutoring or teaching for 20 years. Previously I have tutored or taught ISEE, PSAT, SAT, ACT, GED, GRE, English, Spanish, and Latin, all math through introductory calculus, an introduction to Thomistic Metaphysics, European history, and Christology. I attended Plan II at the University of Texas at Austin and have a BA in Spanish Literature and a BS in Mathematics from the same University of Texas. I have done work in philosophy and Latin at the University of Dallas. I have an MA in Sacred Theology from Ave Maria University and am a PhD candidate in Historical Theology at Catholic University of America, where I am very slowly writing a dissertation on tradition in the thought of Melchior Cano, O.P. My scores on relevant standardized tests are excellent. I have taught at three different high schools in Texas and Wisconsin and one college.

I am interested in crafting with my pupils (and their parents as the case may be) a reasonable plan to achieve their goals; please note that some goals are really just wishes, and there might be no reasonable plan to achieve such a goal. In that case, I would work with student to develop a more reasonable goal. In any case, I am demanding of my pupils but on my part give the necessary effort in return. In addition to competency, I try to provide good example to my pupils. Sometimes a tutor/pupil relationship does not work, and if I were to determine that I am not the best one to help you, I would end our relationship so that you do not waste your money and are able to get the assistance for which you are looking. I work best with students 14 and up but have tutored as young as 10.

I am willing to send a more detailed résumé to parties who have expressed interest in working with me. I am not trained to work with students who have anything beyond a very mild learning disability. If your child has such, it would be to your benefit find another tutor. Finally, I do not schedule any session on Sunday, and a minimum session is one hour; sessions will not be scheduled for less than one hour, and at least one hour will always be charged.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I am an ABD in Historical Theology from Catholic University of America. I currently teach Christology at a small college. While my Greek is rusty, my Latin, for the Vulgate, is good. So long as the student neither demands only original language examination nor that I put to the side my Catholicism in the Bible study, I should be able to help all but the very advanced student.

ISEE

While I began tutoring for the ISEE only this past year, I have over a decade of work in tutoring for standardized tests. Through Wyzant, I am qualified for the GED, the SAT, the ACT, and the GRE. While each test has some unique aspects, they all are standardized tests and share certain patterns.

Concerning the ISEE, I have read all the literature on how to proceed and on scoring. There does not exist any particular credential for ISEE tutoring. Rather I present the changes in percentile ranking for my tutee. The changes in some portions could be larger, but they are the evidence of my ability to improve ISEE scores.

The following set is the percentile rankings from his first test : (Recall that the questions increase in difficulty as the student advances to each higher grade in school.) Verbal Reasoning: 45; Reading Comprehension: 53; Quantitative Reasoning: 51; Mathematics Achievement: 54.

After my tutoring the percentile rankings for the next year increased in every area although with notable differences. The following are those new post-tutoring percentile rankings: Verbal Reasoning: 52; Reading Comprehension: 94; Quantitative Reasoning: 70; Mathematics Achievement: 60.

Potential tutees and their parents should decide in part based on this evidence and my general history with standardized tests as to whether I am a good fit.

Public Speaking

I have been a college instructor for the past five semesters, during which my classes have a large lecture component. I also was as acting Academic Dean, a position in which I had to speak to groups of students and faculty. Finally, although long ago, I was specifically trained to speak publicly as a young man, and I engaged in a few competitions, in which I did well.

Religion

This is somewhat variable, but I am ABD in historical theology and was also a professor of theology at Fisher More College.

Excellent tutor — Albert has helped my son make great strides in Latin. He is patient but firm. My son was struggling with his new Latin course and Albert helped him get up to speed quickly to where he is now doing well in class and his instructor enthusiastically compliments his turnaround. Thanks Albert! ...
