About Mary Beth

After 21 years of teaching at the high school level, I came to the conclusion that the interested and invested students are the most rewarding. My skills are self-taught through hands-on practice in a practical setting. I continue learning through online coursework and other classes to better my skills and increased understanding.

I have taught journalism which included: interviewing, writing, revision, proofreading, page layout and graphic design, marketing and all aspects of film and digital photography. I am skilled in Adobe InDesign and PhotoShop programs.
I also have taught photojournalism, art photography and 2-D painting and drawing.

I trained high school yearbook and newspaper students to use Adobe InDesign for creating pages for publication. Student photographers were also trained in using Adobe PhotoShop for minor corrections. I have used PhotoShop extensively the last few years for my freelance photography business. These Adobe programs are used by professional designers and intended to be used with each other for maximum results.

Since art is subjective. I teach photographic composition and follow basic design principles. A photographic eye can be trained and fine tuned, but it best explored through hands-on practice with homework assignments.

With a deeper understanding of the software and it's capabilities a student can master a marketable skill. If you are needing to learn: an Adobe program, how to use all of your digital camera settings, computer layout and design or artistic composition, I am your go to person. I available weekend evenings and weekends. One on one tutoring is ideal and that way I can targeted to your specific needs. I look forward to working with you to accelerate skills.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe InDesign

As a high school journalism teacher, I taught desktop publishing and advised both the student yearbook and newspaper. Both of the publications were taught Adobe InDesign for page layout and graphic design elements in these publications. Each yearbook was a minimum of 256 pages that were submitted as camera-ready art. The desktop publishing course focused on learning Adobe InDesign with project products like CD covers, magazine cover, basic marketing materials (business cards, letterhead and tri-fold brochures). Yearbook and newspaper students won city and state design awards. I can provide images of published work that supports my skills.

Graphic Design

As a high school journalism teacher, I taught desktop publishing and advised both the student yearbook and newspaper. Both of the publications were taught Adobe InDesign for page layout and graphic design elements in these publications. Students created page folios, infograph information and theme-related logos. The desktop publishing course focused on using InDesign to make logos, charts and graphs as visually support to accompanying stories. I can also provide images of published work that supports my skills. I completed 13 years as of high school yearbooks and newspapers (at least 6 issues per school year).

Photography

As a high school journalism teacher, I taught photojournalism with film and digitally. As the student yearbook and newspaper adviser, I trained student photographers to use shutter speed and aperture settings to correctly exposure film and digital images that tell a photographic story. Photoshop was used for cropping and placing images in the camera-ready publications. Yearbook and newspaper students won city, state and national photography awards through TAJE and JEA. I can provide images of published work that supports my skills. I have taught art photography (both film and digital) for three of the last eight years and sponsored the school's Photo Club. I have been shooting professionally for the last year and a half.

Mary Beth did a terrific job of providing introduction to the basics of using my wife and father's new digital cameras. They are very excited to use their knowledge to take pictures of our future adventures.
