About Hannah

Howdy! My passion for education has been long standing; when I was a child I always wanted to help everyone with their school work, which has spilled over into my teaching career today. I am certified to teach all subjects from Early Childhood until 6th grade as well as English, specifically, for 7th through 12th grade. Though English was my main area of study, I appreciate the value of all subjects and am great at working with younger students in Math, Science, and History as well.

I believe in challenging students while having high expectations. A student who doesn't have something to reach for will become bored and restless in their educational career, therefore, I always find innovative and creative ways to ensure that the student will have work above their current level, helping them to achieve greatness!

As a mom myself I understand how important education is and work very hard with all of my students to ensure that they grasp the basics first so that they have the foundation for further success in life!

With a Bachelor's in English - Creative Writing, my entire college career was spent studying and comprehending the English Language. Through my studies then and continuation of self-study I work daily to improve my skills in grammar, proofreading, reading, and literature to ensure my students get my all.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

Tutoring Elementary students K-6th is a major passion of mine. Eventually, I want to teach in Elementary school, which is why I obtained my Teacher's Certification in all subjects from Pre-k through 6th grade through the state of Texas. I have had several years of tutoring students in all subjects from elementary beginning in High School and keeping up with it. I am constantly looking at the new trends in teaching for Elementary and the techniques they are using to stay current with how the students are being taught. Due to not only my certification, but the research and experience I have with Elementary students, I am highly qualified to help them with all subjects they may be struggling with.

English

As a certified English teacher for Pre-K through 12th grade, I am highly qualified to help students with all facets of English. I currently teach 9th grade English, but tutor many grade levels. I like to keep up with the new trends and help my students learn to love to read and write!

Literature

Literature is a huge passion of mine! I read everything from Chaucer to the most current Young Adult Literature to Dr. Seuss. I believe that reading is the foundation to all learning, because as you read you learn without realizing it. The more exposure to literature, the better learner one becomes. I thoroughly enjoy finding a subject a student loves, and help them grow their love of reading beginning with the subject!

Proofreading

Since I was young, I have enjoyed helping others write, revise, and edit their papers. Throughout high school and college, I had friends run to me for help with their papers, knowing I wouldn't let them turn anything in that was less than A material. I love going through a paper and pointing out what a writer is doing great at and helping them improve where they need help!

Reading

Reading is the basis for all modern societies. In order to do just about anything, one must know how to read. I have always had a soft spot for helping others read and learn to love reading as I have seen how beneficial it is in everyday society. I believe in allowing a student to choose what they want to read to help them learn to love it, otherwise they will resent reading and want nothing to do with recreational and required reading.

SAT Reading

On top of teaching 9th grade English, I have always taught a SAT reading prep class and help the current SAT prep teacher in her planning.

STAAR

As a certified teacher in the state of Texas, I am fully qualified for STAAR test prep. I have gone through numerous tests in various grade levels to find trends that they are using throughout the years. With this knowledge I am able to help students focus on what has been on every test throughout the time frame of the past available test to give them a one-up on succeeding. I also have learned tricks on how to properly go through the test in a more efficient way, both time wise and comprehension wise. With all of the tips for the test that I teach, I am confident that if the student sticks with them, they will pass the STAAR.

Swimming

I began swimming at a young age on summer leagues and when I went into high school I began swimming competitively for my school UIL team. Along with having many years of experience in the pool swimming, I was also a certified lifeguard during the summers in high school and taught swim lessons during that time and have continued to do so on and off for the past several years. I believe in teaching students to become comfortable with their face/ears in the water and learn proper breathing techniques, as that could save their lives one day. Another focus is treading, as it is also a life saving technique. My best strokes are back stroke and freestyle, but I am capable at teaching all strokes and have swam competitively using all.

Writing

Currently I am serving as a Texas Certified 9th grade English teacher in the greater Houston area. My degree is in English from Texas A&M, though my passion for writing began far before that. I have always helped out when it came to writing and love getting to continue my passion as my career!

Hannah Handles Impossible Task

Hannah is tutoring my grandson, who is supposed to be a six grade level student on his reading and writing. My grandson is seriously behind at this point at a second grade level. Hannah's goal is to bring him at the 6 grade level. At this point she is working very hard on his vocabulary and grammar. I would like to express my satisfaction in the way she prepares the instructions and her ability
