About Diana

I worked for 5 1/2 years at an alternative high school with students who did not want to be at school or were having problems with academics. I was blessed with a student who could barely speak English one year so designed a program based on her abilities. I also spent 8 summers working in a migrant school to assist students from ages 3-17. This program was designed to work with students who were likely to miss school due to traveling.

Every student has individual needs so I have always gotten to know and understand my students before just assuming they can do the assigned work. I was laid off in January of 2010 due to budget cuts. During this time I finished my Master's Degree in Special Education. I have ADHD, and raised four children afflicted with it as well. I have done, and continue to do, research on ADHD and other disabilities that could affect a child's learning. I have worked with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, and behavior disorders as well. I have an enormous amount of patience for children who cannot sit still or focus on their work.

I have a Master's Degree in Special Education.

I have gone through Dyslexia training and currently use those techniques with my students to improve their ability to decode as well as assisting with their spelling. Most recently, I attended a one-day training on "Braingym". This is a movement-based program designed to assist students with their learning.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

As an adult who has ADHD, I raised 4 children also afflicted with ADHD. I researched everything I could get my hands on when we were first diagnosed in 1988 and have been able to work with behavior modification to redirect not only my own children, but other students who may or may not have been diagnosed. I am very patient and understand that these children lack the focus to be able to complete assignments. They may also have difficulty sitting still, as do I. If a child needs to move around in his/her seat or stand, rather than sit while we do lessons, I have no problem with that.

Aspergers

I have a master's degree in special education. I have studied techniques to assist a child and family. I have worked with some children with Asperger's and autism using the techniques I have studied.

Autism

I have studied autism and have worked with autistic students and parents to set up routines and strategies to assist them in their daily lives as well as with school.

Dyslexia

I have a master's degree in special education. I went through the Orton-Gillingham Dyslexia Training program and currently use the techniques with most young students I tutor.

Elementary (K-6th)

As a teacher at an alternative high school, and with my degree in special education, I have worked with many students over the years who were only capable of elementary work. I also spent 9 years working with preschool-middle school migrant students in the summer to help them attempt to catch up to grade level in all subjects. I currently work with K-8th grade students with special needs and students who are just struggling in certain subject areas for various reasons.

Handwriting

I have been teaching and tutoring for 9 years. As a high school teacher, I required students to write in cursive as well as have readable printing. Schools today are getting away from proper letter formation as well as cursive. I continue to use handwriting with my students on a daily basis.

Phonics

I have worked with many children over the last couple years who did not know the alphabet, or the sounds each letter makes. I have spent many hours working with them to build the confidence needed to become independent readers. I am proud to say that all of these young children have progressed quite remarkably and are continuing to grow in their vocabulary and confidence.

Saxophone

I studied the saxophone from 5th grade all through high school. I taught my children to play as well. I still own my instrument and can play, even though I do not get it out that often.

Sewing

I have been sewing since I was 10 years old. I made most of my daughter's clothes when she was younger. I still make most of my own clothes, as well as all of my daughter's formal dresses and her graduation dress.

Special Needs

As a teacher at an alternative high school, I worked with teenagers with behavior disorders as well as learning disabilities. I currently work with some younger children with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, behavior disorders as well as general learning disabilities. I also spent 9 years working with preschool-middle school migrant students in the summer to help them attempt to catch up to grade level in all subjects. I currently work with K-8th grade students with special needs and students who are just struggling in certain subject areas for various reasons.

Study Skills

I taught at an alternative high school for 5 1/2 years. This was a school for behavioral as well as attendance problems. These students-for various reasons-did not have the desire to gain an education. It was my job to work with them to gain the skills necessary to not only complete immediate classes, but to continue to hone these skills to make it to graduation. During my time with the school, the graduation rate for my program was 95%.
