About Alissa

My passion for education has been cultivated from an early age. I have extensive experience with kids of all ages from tutoring, teaching English (while working in Costa Rica), coaching sports, being a camp counselor, and aiding with the college search/admissions.

My strengths are in the Humanities - English (language arts and literature), social studies, geography, history, Spanish, and related fields. I also have extensive experience with playing and coaching volleyball, soccer, softball/baseball, and basketball. My experience includes working with students at each school level (elementary, middle school, high school, college) as well as adults learning English and Spanish.

My tutoring approach will be personalized to each student with whom I work. Along with the student, we will figure out strengths, weaknesses, and which learning style(s) are best for the student. We will then create a plan highlighting goals and strategies to employ in order to achieve a greater understanding of the subject(s). I often use humor and games to keep it fun and fresh, regardless of the subject. My overall teaching approach is to teach students to think for themselves and connect the material to their own life by using real examples and life experiences.

Furthermore, I have been on the receiving end of tutoring. When I am tutoring a student, he or she will never feel embarrassed that they do not know something. I will challenge the student because I will see a great amount of potential, but I will not let the student feel overwhelmed or uncomfortable.

I am happy to tutor in the student's home, a location of the student's choosing, or meet in a local library.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

American History was my favorite subject in high school - AP U.S. History and now I am an avid reader of American nonfiction. I truly believe that history repeats itself; therefore, we can make comparisons from today's society to the past and better understand both then and now.

English

While completing a Bachelor's of Arts degree from George Mason University, my major was very writing-intensive. As an interdisciplinary Global Affairs major, I learned about a lot of different subjects, comprehended what I read, and then wrote about them in my own words. English was fundamental to my success - everything from grammar, reading comprehension, writing, spelling, and how to articulate thoughts in a coherent way.

European History

Although many people may think that European History is boring, it is still important to know. There are countless patterns in history and we will find similarities in the way people thought and lived, no matter the time period or place. You can even find common themes in today's society that people in Europe experiences a long time ago.

Geography

As a Global Affairs major in college, I learned about all the regions of the world. Geography is important because it is easier to identify the world's current events and understand how people live around the world.

Government & Politics

I have taken several Government & Politics classes at the college level such as Introduction to International Politics and Political Theory. I have also studied policy which directly relates to the United States government as well as governments of other countries. Furthermore, my mother was the mayor of my hometown for 6 years so I have a good understanding of government at the state and local levels.

Grammar

One of my academic strengths is writing. Writing encompasses grammar as well as presenting your thoughts in a concise, coherent way. My major in college is described as writing-intensive, so I have written many A-grade academic papers.

Literature

My high school senior English teacher really showed me how to love literature. Not only did I learn how to write in her class, I also learned how to look at symbolism, plot, theme, character development, and rhetorical devices to make reading more enjoyable and relatable. Although I have not read every classic or novel, I am happy to read along with the student and learn something myself.

Proofreading

Proofreading is essential for writing as a whole because it helps you review the grammar in each sentence. With my background in writing, I will help the student learn to craft each sentence in a clear, concise way. I will tailor the tutoring to how the student learns best.

Reading

An important thing to keep in mind is that you don't have to be the fastest reader to be a good reader. Reading comprehension can be challenging at any level, but you can be successful if you know what to look for and how to look for it. I will work with the student to improve the level of understanding of what he or she is reading.

Soccer

I played both club soccer and on my high school team. Repetition in soccer is key, whether it be dribbling, passing, shooting, defense, or overall conditioning. I grew up with great coaches who always had fun games to play and I will do the same.

Spanish

Hola! I have studied Spanish at every school level, including college. After college, I went to language school in Costa Rica and then took an internship in the northern part of the country for 6 months. I can help the student with memorizing verb tenses and when and how to use the different prepositions and other grammar aspects. I can also teach the student about the wonderful culture of Spanish-speaking countries.

Spelling

Spelling can be difficult to learn because there are many exceptions to the rule. I will use games to help teach spelling and ensure understanding. I taught English to Spanish speakers when I lived in Costa Rica for six months.

Vocabulary

As an avid reader, I am always seeking to expand my vocabulary. Vocabulary is important so you can better articulate your thoughts. There are many fun vocabulary games you can play so the work does not seem as tedious or difficult. Vocabulary helps with spelling and overall confidence in mastering the English language.

Volleyball

I have coached recreational volleyball for elementary through high school school boys and girls for 5 seasons. In addition, I have played at both the club and high school varsity level. I am passionate about youth sports and what they teach - sportsmanship, teamwork, commitment and more.

World History

Although many people may think that World History is boring, it is still important to know. There are countless patterns in history and we will find similarities in the way people thought and lived, no matter the time period or place. You can even find common themes in today's society that people in other regions experienced long ago.

Writing

Becoming a strong writer does not happen overnight because it includes so many aspects: grammar, proofreading/editing, and oftentimes reading. Furthermore, there are many different styles of writing. I will help the student take his or her thoughts and creative ideas and put them in written form. Writing is important for school, but can also be fun, and even therapeutic.

Great tutor!

Alissa responded very quickly to my response to meet with my son. She was able to help him with his essays for his English IV/Lit class. He has a very demanding teacher and she was very impressed with his progress after only a few sessions with Alissa!
