About Mike

I am a retired middle school teacher, teaching middle school for 9 years, specializing in computer related classes which includes operation and maintenance of IBM-compatible computers, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook as well as other applications. I also have experience in designing and developing web pages and the use of web page development software. I also teach basic computer skills such as keyboarding, web searches, web-based research and PC architecture.

As a California state certificated teacher, I was qualified to teach all elementary and middle school subjects up to and including the 8th grade. Using the Paxton-Patterson PAL Laboratory, I taught laboratory-based classes in Laser Fundamentals, Digital Music Creation, Small Engine Maintenance and Operation, Pneumatics Fundamentals, Flight Technology, Computer Graphics and Design, Environment and Ecology, Video Production, Basic Computer Aided Design (CAD), Structural Engineering, Materials Processing and Design, and Alternative Energy Concepts.

I have been teaching in some sort of capacity for 40 years either as a corporate trainer teaching adults or as a middle school teacher teaching pre-teens. I also served as a member of the adjunct faculty at VictorValley Community College teaching Residential Construction Wiring to adults.

The appeal of tutoring is the ability to work in a one-on-one environment, providing immediate and effective corrective instruction, watching the student develop and being a part of the immediate interactive process. Tutoring also provides the unique opportunity to teach a student who is eager to learn opposed to the experiences of public education which forces students into classes despite their desire of the subject matter.

My undergraduate degree is in Electronics Technology from Chapman College in Orange Ca., which is coupled with my 10 years experience in the military repairing advanced digital analysis equipment as well as teaching digital repair techniques to navel personnel. My Masters Degree in Education from Chapman University specializes in Instructional Techniques and Curriculum Development.

While not an Electrical Engineering degree, this category is the closest to the categories offered by Wyzant software. I have over 40 years repairing and maintaining all classes of electrical devices, I was also a California state licensed electrician.

My background and training as a middle school teacher along with my corporate world experiences has presented me the opportunity to learn the English language in a formal, business setting as well as improve my grammatical structure. I have written technical documentation presented to U.S. and Foreign government personnel as well as trained foreign military personnel in the operation and maintenance of military weapon systems.

My training as a teacher for the California public school system qualified me to teach is what is called a "self-contained" classroom in which the teacher teaches all the core subjects to the students without moving from class to class.

I have had 22 years experience preparing and presenting lessons and presentations to various audiences using Word, PowerPoint, Excel and other third party software packages has given me the opportunity to use and exercise PowerPoint to its fullest. I have also received corporate sponsored training on the use of PowerPoint by Hughes Missile Systems Company and General Dynamics Corporation as one of their employee development classes.

I present a wide and diverse educational opportunity for the student to learn. I am always available via email and encourage students to contact me for any questions they may have. I am flexible and can usually accommodate any reasonable request and I normally reply within 24 hours of the request. While my cancellation policy is 24 hours prior notice of cancellaion, there is opportunity to make up lessons and achieve our mutual end goal. I look forward to meeting my new students.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

DOS

In the early days of computers, DOS or disk operating system was the only way to interact with the computer using a command line interface where the computer operator would type instructions directly to the compiler which converted the instructions into machine language for the computer. DOS was the only interface until the advent of a GUI interface (Apple). You could use the command line interface to reconfigure the size of your swap file in Windows (up to windows 3.1) set buffers, set available files to a size, typically 40, run maintenance programs such as chkdsk, scandisk in the later versions of DOS. DOS was originally used as the primary interface for reading and writing to the storage disk but later expanded to allow user access to the disk operating system to expand the capabilities of a PC, either IBM-compatible or Apple. Various commands and their functions may be found on the internet but the system has fallen to general disuse since the advent of windows 95, which automated most of the DOS functions.

Elementary (K-6th)

I retired from the California Public Schools System as a certificated teacher qualified to teach in a multi-subject and single subject area. My multi-subject credential authorized me to teach in a "self contained" classroom in which the elementary school teacher taught all the core and elective classes to a single class each day. I received my multi-subject credential in June of 2005 and retired from teaching in 2014, 9 years later.

Elementary Math

I was a certificated multi-subject elementary and middle school teacher in California before retiring. I am qualified to teach in a self contained classroom up through middle school to include elementary math and pre-algebra.

English

I am a retired secondary school teacher certificated to teach all elementary and secondary school subjects in a self contained classroom up thru the 8th grade, as evidenced by my California teaching certification. the s. As English is my native language and I have spent 40+ years using proper grammar and syntax while I acted as a company representative for 3 major aerospace and defense companies as well as interfacing with General Staff Officers in the military and company vice presidents, it was imperative that I learn proper sentence construction and grammar usage.

Grammar

As a technical writer of government technical manuals while employed by the aerospace defense industry, grammar was a key component in the production of said technical documentation, Later in my educational pursuit, I conducted research and prepared thesis documents to support my postulations concerning the country's preeminent educational philosophers as well as my Master's thesis on the public education system of the United States. I feel I have the tools and techniques to help you reach your goals.

Please contact me to schedule a less to see if it will work for you.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have 30 years' experience preparing PowerPoint presentations for the aerospace industry and 9 years' experience teaching PowerPoint to middle school students.

Microsoft Word

As a desktop repair and support person for Computer Sciences Corporation, the computing environment was a Microsoft environment, using MS Windows as the primary operating system and utilizing MS Office in both Apple and IBM-compatible personal computers, I installed and configured MS Office to meet the customer's individual requirements. Pursuing my Masters degree required submissions of lesson plans, training support documentation and essays prepared with MS Word. As qualified by my California single subject teaching credential I am certified to teach repair and maintenance of computers, operating systems and various computer applications. I taught the use of Word, PowerPoint and Excel to the students at Mesa Linda Middle School. I also provided computer and application support the staff at Mesa Linda Middle School. While I am reluctant to call myself an expert, I am very experienced in the use of MS Word program.

Reading

As part of my effort to obtain a Masters degree, I was expected to read, analyze, interpret and draw conclusions to writings and documents prepared by various standards of education and explore various teaching pedagogies espoused by other leaders in the educational field. My California teaching credential as a multiple subject teacher allows me to teach all common core subjects including reading in a self contained classroom. Additionally, my military background required me to read, learn and exercise knowledge factors gained solely from reading. As an aerospace engineer one of my duties required me to read, interpret and negotiate contract variables with the US government. My quest towards technology awareness requires continued reading about various technical subjects including computer design and software performance.
