About Jonathan

Hi, my name is Jonathan, but my friends call me Jon. Teaching is one of my life's passions! I am married, with one child and I recently completed a degree in Philosophy with a minor in Communications. I love books of the fiction, journalistic, philosophical, and theological variety and my favorite author is N. T. Wright. My wife says I have too many books and is currently helping me look for another book shelf! I am proficient in guitar and singing, as well as songwriting. I have lectured to groups as large as 200, and mentored students in one-on-one settings in the subjects of English, Math, Music, Philosophy, Bible, and Time-management. My experience in tutoring has been steady throughout the years, whether that is through talking through a book or teaching music.

Tutoring is a lost art in our culture and I would love the opportunity to walk with a student in a long term situation, that way I can see their progress over a longer period of time. Encouragement is one of my gifts, and I would love the chance to work with you! I have taught through the Bible since I was 19 years old (I'm now 27), and I have extensive knowledge in areas such as New Testament, Pauline Studies, and Narrative Theology. All of my English and literature courses were "A" courses in college, but I also have a passion for literature and its impact on the moral development of the individual student. I have spent years lecturing in contained environments, as well as public speaking in the open yard, so to speak. On average, I read 60 books a year and I love the classics. I not only understand plot and character-development, but also the power of reading as a habit in the students' life. I am generally available from 9am-9pm, Monday through Saturdays, and I can travel to students as well as meet them online. My base rate is $60/hour for in-person lessons.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I have 6 years of experience teaching the Bible to students. What I enjoy doing is examining the overall meaning of the narrative of scripture and asking questions about the text we examine. I am also a theology student at Fuller Theological Seminary.

Guitar

I have been playing guitar for 12 years, and have taught guitar on and off for 6 years. Not only am I self taught (an important characteristic of all guitar players) I also have experience playing in various live venues. Former students of mine have gone on to singing and playing in front of large groups.

Philosophy

I have spent the better part of three years reading Philosophy at the University level - particularly investing time in understanding the rift between analytic and continental schools of thought. My degree is in Philosophy, with a focus on the history of thought, as well as Deconstruction and Existentialism. While I attended University I participated in the undergrad symposium, where I presented a paper on the subject of "Death," and received high marks. Along with existentialist concerns, I participated in a course focusing on the nature of Justice, which required me to write two arguments a weak for the many sides of each issue, as well as my own personal objections. This class, along with a few other similar kinds of undergrad seminars, conditioned my mind to work through the cognitive dissonance that I, and so many other students, deal with on a regular basis. I received high marks in every single Philosophy course I took at University, which contributed to being accepted into grad school where I will study Theology.

Songwriting

Many young students have written songs, performed those songs for their peers, or even published their music through a series of online steps they follow from ASCAP. Not only have I done the same, I have also been able to see my songs played in short films and promotional material. I hold a writers and publishers license with ASCAP, as well as currently mentoring a songwriter who just received her first record deal - which includes working through every one of her songs, and getting them studio ready in 8 months. Songwriting is part of my life.
