About BJ

I am a professional composer specializing in music for concert, media, and video games. I have degrees in music composition from Temple University and the Peabody Conservatory, and have been active in the field for many years.

While I teach a wide variety of music production and composition subjects, I am most comfortable teaching music theory, composition, and piano. That said, all of my teaching is highly customizable with one unifying thread: I think it is best to have a goal in mind that we can work towards. Having a specific goal will give me the opportunity to provide the best lessons possible.

For lessons, I teach out of my music production studio in Bryn Mawr. While I am willing to travel for lessons, I prefer if we could work from my studio. I have an abundance of musical scores, recordings, instruments, and other equipment that I constantly refer to while teaching. Parents are welcome to wait downstairs.

A note on pre paying for lessons: After the first lesson or two, I recommend that you pre pay between 2-4 lessons in advance. The benefit is two-fold: 1. When students invest in lessons by paying in chunks of 2-4 weeks, they are more inclined to complete their work and meet at every lesson date. Knowing that you will lose money by not attending (unless in case of emergency, and 24+ hours of advance notice in which case we will reschedule), I have found that attendance is close to 100%. 2. Unlike a tangible good, I cannot resell "friday at 2:00" after it has come and gone. Instead, my time is lost and cannot necessarily be used for professional work and other teaching.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve your musical goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

I have a BM and MM in Music Composition. I have written concert music for solo instruments, ensembles, and the full symphony orchestra, in addition to music for various media (electronic, rock, blues, etc). I have taught music composition in applications ranging from traditional orchestral settings to "math rock" music.

Ear Training

Ear training is a passion of mine. You don't have to have perfect pitch to hear everything going on in a piece of music and use that information to your advantage.

Ear training is not only about identifying the different intervals between notes, but about understanding structures and using common sense and deductive reasoning. I have many tools and trainers to help students (and professionals alike) improve their musical ear.

General Music

I have a BM and MM in Music Composition. I have written concert music for solo instruments, ensembles, and the full symphony orchestra, in addition to music for various media (electronic, rock, blues, etc). I have taught music composition in applications ranging from traditional orchestral settings to "math rock" music.

Guitar

I have 15 years of experience learning about, playing and performing guitar. Currently I teach lessons privately at my home studio, and through a school.

My approach is heavily based on fundamentals, and I stress reading standard notation rather than tablature.

Music Production

I have produced and worked on several film scores, rock albums, and multimedia projects. I work with Logic X daily in professional applications. In addition, I have a wide variety of experience in recording and mixing music.

Music Theory

I have 6 years of formal training in music theory, both in degree programs and in private study. My favorite subjects include Counterpoint (voice leading), Harmony, and 20th Century Analysis.

Piano

I minored in Piano at Temple University and took lessons during my 4 years there. Prior to that, I studied piano for 5 years. I have been teaching for 4 years and currently teach at the Dallas School of Music.
