About Michaela

Bio

My favorite thing about tutoring chemistry is any time I get to witness what I like to call a "lightbulb moment." Chemistry is notoriously tough for students and many times students get frustrated and think they just can't get it. So, I love when I get to see them answer a question on their own (that they previously would've felt stumped by) and I can see that little "aha I got it!" look on their face. It makes me so happy to help students realize that they themselves really are capable of...

Chemistry is notoriously tough for students and many times students get frustrated and think they just can't get it. So, I love when I get to see them answer a question on their own (that they previously would've felt stumped by) and I can see that little "aha I got it!" look on their face. It makes me so happy to help students realize that they themselves really are capable of mastering difficult concepts.

A bit about myself:
I graduated magna cum laude from California Polytechnic State University of San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly SLO) with a Biochemistry BS combined with an accelerated MS in Polymers Science. I am currently working on my PhD in Biomedical Engineering at Texas A & M.

A bit about my tutoring experience:
I have 5+ years of tutoring and teaching experience in science and math, but my specialty is general chemistry. At Cal Poly SLO, I became involved with the Athletics Department as a tutor for biology and chemistry (2013). The following year I became a TA for the general chemistry courses, and attended weekly seminars discussing pedagogical techniques to help students better learn chemistry (2014). After that I moved up to become a workshop leader for the general chemistry courses (2015). I was required to attend lecture and then I would format worksheets and practice exams for students who signed up for my evening workshop- so now I'm able to create helpful example problems for general chemistry on the fly during one-on one sessions.
Throughout my time at Cal Poly I was also a private tutor primarily for general chemistry, and have gotten great feedback from many students over the years. I don't typically guarantee a certain grade, because it really depends on the student and their overall study habits; but, I can confidently say that every student who has worked with me one-on-one in general chemistry has come back for multiple sessions and have always thanked me for helping them improve their grade pretty significantly. Now at Texas A & M I private tutor and I TA for a biomaterials laboratory courses, where I am also required to lecture on topics mostly related to polymer chemistry.
