Over the past summer, I had the opportunity to work for Breakthrough Collaborative, an AmeriCorps program, dedicated to supporting inner city children at several sites in the country. The ninth-graders that I met during my summer in Austin taught me so much more than lessons I prepared on how to write a research paper. Every individual child had a difficult story of their own; a father that left at age 6, or having to become a full-time parent to younger siblings. Every individual child had dreams of being the first one in their family to go to college. Yet every individual child had been told several times that they won’t be able to achieve those dreams by their own teachers.
Hearing these stories directly from the children inspired me to help others who were less fortunate. In the past, I have raised money through book sales, dance productions, and other fundraising events to help promote education in villages in India, raise money for cancer research, and for battered women and children shelters among other causes. My dream is to combine my passion for social work and environmental protection to help build a more peaceful future where children learn the skills necessary to stand on their own two feet as adults, as well as create a more environmentally conscious world. I absolutely enjoy teaching and would love to learn more from students as I complete my graduate program at Texas A&M.
With ADHD, I struggled a lot as a child with math. I have the skills and the know-how to get through these kinds of difficulties and approach math differently based on the student that I am working with. I have taken all of my math classes until Calculus 2 and have the qualifications for elementary math.
As an Ecology Science and Management major, I enjoy biology a lot and have been learning aspects of biology through high school and college. I took AP and IB Biology in high school and successfully tested out.
English is a huge part of the IB and AP curriculum. I was born and raised in America while the rest of my family is from India. I have a good grasp on English and writing. The other languages that I am also proficient in have helped improve my English, as well.
I have been teaching throughout my life whether it was dance or academics, but I have the proper skills to creatively teach the common core requirements.
I love to teach and am a very flexible person. I'm patient and I understand the struggles of learning with ADHD. I also really care about the well-doing and improvements of my students rather than just about the money I am receiving. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
