About Jonathan

Howdy! I am a Junior at Texas A&M University. My major is mathematics and I have a minor in economics. I like to hike, kayak, eat, watch netflix, and do recreational calculus.

I've been tutoring for 3.5 years, including some freelance work and a position at The Tutoring Center in Flower Mound. I also worked as a chemistry teacher's assistant for a year, and was a TA at Texas A&M University for both the mathematics and physics departments this past year.

My teaching style is to ask probing questions so that the student actually learns the material as opposed to just memorizing formulas and regurgitating crammed information on the exam. In regards to math, I treat it as a language course, because it is essentially a language whose alphabet is made of numbers as opposed to letters. When students learn it through that lens, they understand it better and make connections between concepts they never saw before.

I am available most times during the week and can tutor at coffee shops, libraries, or another place of the student's choosing. My rate is $50/hr for all tutoring. I do charge extra for long distance traveling, the rate of which will be determined based on where you want to meet. Do mind the cancellation policy. If I do not receive more than 24 hours notice for a cancellation or rescheduling, you will be charged regardless. I look forward to hearing from you and helping you reach your potential!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I have tutored ACT math for a year. I also have taken the exam recently which allows me to teach my students how the test works and how they should take it.

Algebra 1

I've taken three years of algebra 1 classes.

Algebra 2

I've tutored algebra 2 for three years, the longest of any subject.

Calculus

I have been enrolled in college-leveled engineering calculus courses for the past year, and have been tutoring calculus for two years. Like all my subjects, I teach by using probing questions to force the student to think critically about the material so they may learn rather than just memorize. This is necessary for calculus because it is very concept based; one cannot get by merely by memorizing formulas and plugging numbers into them. I teach my students to see the big picture of the field while they learn individual parts such as series or differentiation so they not only get good grades, but also learn and appreciate the subject.

Precalculus

I have taken college calculus 1, 2, and 3 and have been teaching precalculus for 3 years.

PSAT

I have taken the ACT and SAT, scoring a 34 and 2220 (the equivalent of a 1480 on the 2016 and later version) on them respectively.

SAT Math

I have tutored ACT and SAT math for a year. I also have taken the exams recently, getting perfect scores on both sections, so I know what to inform the students to anticipate. I teach them not only what math is going to be on the exam, but how to take the exams how they are given.

Trigonometry

I have taken trigonometry and used it in applied calculus for the past four years.

Very knowledgeable and made concepts easy

The first lesson was exceptional. Helped to focus and identify which areas needed additional study. After working together turned in best homework grade this year.
