About Jonathan

Hi! My name's Jonathan. I graduated from Coram Deo Academy in 2015 and am currently enrolled at Texas A&M University. My major is chemical engineering. I plan on transferring to the Cockrell school of engineering at UT Austin next Spring. I love hiking, kayaking, eating, netflixing, adventuring, listening to music, and recreational calculus.

I've been tutoring for three years, including some freelance work and a position at The Tutoring Center in Flower Mound. I also worked as a chemistry teacher's assistant for a year. I believe knowledge is the key to happiness and fulfillment, and I love that I get to spread that joy by tutoring.

I have gotten A's in all of my mathematics classes since freshman year of high school, including engineering calculus I and II in college, geometry, algebra II, and trigonometry/precal. I got perfect scores on the mathematics section of the SAT plus a 34 on the ACT. I have nearly three years of experience in tutoring all kinds of math.

My teaching style is to ask probing questions so that the student actually learns the material as opposed to just memorizing formulas and regurgitating crammed information on the exam. I treat math as a language course, because it is essentially a language whose alphabet is made of numbers as opposed to letters. When students learn it through that lens, they understand it better and make connections between concept they never saw before and acquire the same appreciation for it's grandeur.

I treat chemistry in the same manner as math. Rather than try to make my students recognize patterns in problem solving and memorize formulas to replicate them on test day, only to forget them the very next, I teach them to examine the bigger picture so they may learn about the building blocks of the universe. I got A's in all three of my chemistry courses, a 740 on the SAT subject test, and was an assistant to my AP chemistry teacher senior year of high school. I've been tutoring chemistry for as long as mathematics.

I am generally available at any time of the week excluding Monday-Thursday 3:00-7:30 and can tutor at coffee shops, libraries, or another place of the student's choosing. My rate is $50/hr for most tutoring and $65/hr for test prep (SAT & ACT). I look forward to hearing from you and helping you reach your potential!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I have tutored ACT math for a year. I also have taken the exam recently which allows me to teach my students how the test works and how they should take it.

Algebra 1

I've taken three years of algebra 1 classes.

Algebra 2

I've tutored algebra 2 for three years, the longest of any subject.

Calculus

I have been enrolled in college-leveled engineering calculus courses for the past year, and have been tutoring calculus for two years. Like all my subjects, I teach by using probing questions to force the student to think critically about the material so they may learn rather than just memorize. This is necessary for calculus because it is very concept based; one cannot get by merely by memorizing formulas and plugging numbers into them. I teach my students to see the big picture of the field while they learn individual parts such as series or differentiation so they not only get good grades, but also learn and appreciate the subject.

SAT Math

I have tutored ACT and SAT math for a year. I also have taken the exams recently, getting perfect scores on both sections, so I know what to inform the students to anticipate. I teach them not only what math is going to be on the exam, but how to take the exams how they are given.
