About Julie

Welcome!

I would love to tutor anyone who is struggling with learning Spanish or English, or who just wants to improve their skills in either language. Helping others learn is my passion, because I realize the benefits of education. But I don't want people to just be learning because I am making them, or because someone else is forcing education on them. I want to help every student I work with to make a decision to try their best to learn, and wherever they struggle (because we all do sometimes, no matter how hard we try), I will provide assistance to overcome these inevitable difficulties. My three main areas of concentration in tutoring are English, including writing/composition, ESL, and Spanish.

I have been tutoring students in English and writing for a number of years, beginning with other students when I myself was in high school. I began helping other students in this area because I enjoyed writing very much and through experience writing developed an excellent command of English grammar. Other students around me were struggling with writing, so I took it upon myself to help them enjoy it as much as I did. Today, I have refined my technique in order to identify the issues a particular student has with writing or other aspects of English, and to then help the student overcome those issues. I work hard to give my students the knowledge of English grammar they need to create their own well-written essays. My ultimate goal is to give them the foundation they need to become good at writing and eventually to enjoy it as I do.

I have tutored multiple students who were learning English as their second language, including two who told me they made A's in classes they would otherwise have made C's in if it were not for my working with them. In order to help these students, I begin with an assessment of their current level of mastery of the English language, and build on the foundation they already have. My goal is to help these students get the most benefit possible from their ESL classes. I help with difficult areas such as English grammar and syntax which can differ considerably from other languages. In addition to assisting with course work, I also hold conversation times with the students I tutor, just to give them an opportunity to speak English, because I have learned from my experience learning other languages that just taking the time to practice conversing with a native speaker is an extremely important aspect of learning another language. Learning Spanish and Arabic, and studying linguistics and other languages, has given me insight into how students learn a second language and has improved my ability to help students who are learning English as their second language.

In the past I have taught Spanish to children and teenagers, using the Spanish language skills I acquired through classes at the University of Mississippi and my study abroad experiences in Argentina and Peru. Language learning is a life-long process, but I have given these children people a head-start by introducing them to the basics of Spanish which will allow them to better understand and acquire the language when they begin classes or travel to a foreign country. I also use these skills in tutoring students who are taking Spanish classes in high school or the university, but want or need additional practice. I have taken graduate level Spanish linguistics and literature classes, achieved high grades in these classes, and tutored other students in the classes who were struggling. This has given me a foundation in tutoring learners of the Spanish language. I also participate in conversations in Spanish with the students I am tutoring, in order to help them further develop their language skills. I believe in putting a high priority on learning a second language, especially Spanish, because it makes the language learner more competitive and ultimately more successful in the increasingly globalized job market.

In order to help students achieve success in any area I tutor, I begin by making an assessment of each student's current understanding of the material in whatever subject I am tutoring. I do this going over the material myself, and engaging the student in conversations regarding the material. This allows me to discover how much the student has become familiarized with the subject, how much they have studied, and what they understand. Once I know what the student does and does not understand, then I develop a plan for explaining the whatever the student does not understand in way that will make it accessible to them. The student's understanding of the material is my primary aim, rather than teaching to a test. However, I always find a way to interest my students in the material at least enough that they feel like studying! I look forward to tutoring more students in any area in which I can be of help, especially Spanish, ESL or English/writing.

I really want to help everyone succeed, and I hope I am able to serve you in your educational goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I made 36 on the ACT English section.

ACT Reading

I received 36 on the reading portion of the ACT, and read regularly maintaining a critical focus, in order to understand the information for college classes.

ESL/ESOL

I have years of experience tutoring ESL students in all aspects of learning and using the English language and one year of volunteer classroom experience teaching beginniner ESL.

Proofreading

I have proofread numerous papers for other students during my time here at the University of Mississippi, and helped them receive A's in classes they would likely otherwise have received C's in.

Reading

Reading is my hobby. I read whenever I get the chance. I consider reading to be one of the most important things in life. I taught one of my sisters to read when she was four, because I didn't want her to have to wait to start school before she could start enjoying reading.

Sewing

I have done sewing for over 10 years, designing and making dresses and other clothing, as well as quilts, bedspreads, and other items. I sew by hand and with a machine, and have used several different types of sewing machines. I have helped teach my sisters to sew as well, and now they do their own sewing projects.

Spanish

I majored in Spanish at the University of Mississippi, graduating summa cum laude after studying abroad for a semester in Peru and traveling in the Spanish-speaking world.

Study Skills

I have numerous times in the past helped students aged 6+ in preparing for tests. One of the aspects I focus on is studying early and retaining knowledge rather than cramming right before an exam.

I also help my students find the most important information presented in their classes and focus on retaining that information, rather than be overwhelmed by the excess of facts.

Writing

I enjoy writing very much and have received very high grades (average A) on my writing assignments during my college career. I am currently working on senior thesis, which I will complete in May, as well as helping my friend with her thesis.

So happy I was able to connect with Julie. She helped my son with a history paper. She was knowledgeable and discussed how he should construct the paper and how to get his thoughts down on the paper.
