In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
In high school and college I played on the varsity teams and won some tournaments. Over the years I have taught many people successfully to play golf and enjoy the game. More formally, in graduate school at Texas A&M a few years ago, I taught beginning golf to college students. I am competent enough to teach the basics to beginners as well as help more experienced players fine tune their game.
