About Monica

Hello, I am a native-born Russian speaker who can start you on the road to learn this beautiful language!

I speak, read and write it, and have previous experience in tutoring adult students in Russian; from helping them learn the alphabet, building a basic vocabulary and proper sentences/simple phrases, to improving conversational and pronunciation skills of more advanced students.

My background includes growing up in a Russian household in Estonia until the age of nine, then immigrating to New York and spending the next sixteen years in a Russian-speaking neighborhood, which allowed me to retain and expand my language skills through social, educational and retail environments. I was also able to use my language skills during my enlistment in the Army, assisting with a US/Russian joint-security mission in Kosovo and with detainee operations at a US Naval base.

During my six years of service, I maintained a consistent Defense Language Proficiency Test (DLPT) score of 3/3 in Russian Reading/Listening, considered as "fluent" by their testing standards. Thirteen years later, this past March, I was able to retake the DLPT again and found out I still have the same level of proficiency of 3/3! This is highly encouraging for me as my future goal is to become a Russian linguist in the Federal Government sector.

If you're interested in learning Russian in fun and unique ways - from using children's books, to reading Russian blogs and news sites, to visiting local stores and coffee shops for "themed" lessons - then don't hesitate in letting me know what your expectations are! If you're looking to travel to Russia, learn to read Russian literature, or simply pass that Russian language class, let me know and we'll come up with a perfect plan for you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

As a Russian-born native speaker for the first nine years of my life, and later settling in a Russian-speaking neighborhood in New York City for the next 16 years, I am able to speak, read and write in Russian on a near-native level. While serving in the US Army, I maintained a consistent DLPT (Defense Language Proficiency Test) score of 3/3 in Listening and Reading in Russian for my entire six-year enlistment. I have used my knowledge of Russian to assist in military operations as a joint-security liaison between US and Russian forces in Kosovo, and as translator/interpreter dealing with detainee operations at the GTMO Naval Station. I have recently retaken the DLPT as a volunteer applicant for the National Language Service Corps and have again attained a score of 3/3 in Russian. I have also tutored adult students in basic to intermediate Russian, teaching beginners the Russian alphabet, basic words and sentence structure, as well as practicing conversational skills and proper pronunciation with more advanced students.
