About Elizabeth

Teaching is what I love to do. To see one of my students have a "light bulb moment" is the greatest thing about this career. I am a certified elementary educator in grades K-6 and was an elementary teacher (grades 2-3) for five years in the public school system. Originally, I started tutoring part-time as a second job after school to help pay the bills. As it turns out, I fell in love with it. I loved it so much that I wanted to make it my full-time career.

**At this time, I am only available in the mornings/early afternoons M-Th. All of my typical "after school" hours are completely booked. Please feel free to contact me for more details on my availability.**

After-school & summer tutoring: I have been able to successfully create, grow and maintain my own full-time tutoring business since moving to the NW Austin/Cedar Park area in May of 2012. Primarily I have worked with elementary and middle school students ages 7-13 in mostly reading and math; however, I have tutored students from age 4 up through adult in reading, math (pre-algebra, algebra I, algebra II, and geometry), writing, handwriting, grammar, vocabulary, phonics, science, social studies, study skills and social skills.

Learning disabilities and special needs: I have worked with many students with various needs and abilities such as gifted and talented, dyslexia, autism, Aspergers, ADD, ADHD and English language learners. As a classroom teacher I would always have many students in my class with various needs and I would adjust my teaching methods to meet all of those needs during lessons. I've also been able to tutor a lot of students with special needs, and in a one-on-one situation I can structure my lessons to fit each student and the way that they learn best.

Homeschooling: Because I have switched to tutoring full-time, I have the flexibility and availability to accommodate children in a homeschool program. I have worked with several homeschool students who need additional help for various reasons. I have worked with several different homeschool curricula, and offered support through supplemental activities, additional explanation of skills and have even helped parents who are new to homeschooling select appropriate materials for their children's learning needs.

My methods are simple, yet proven effective. I begin with an assessment of where the student is in a given subject area, then build up from there. I have found that most struggling students simply need to "fill in the gaps" in order to create a more solid foundation for learning.

While schools do their best to educate our children, there are often times when students need more. Tutoring can be an excellent solution because one-on-one help allows the tutor and student to focus on specific areas of need. Additionally, tutoring can be a great resource for students who are trying to get ahead in specific subject areas. That is why I love tutoring. It gives me the flexibility to tailor my teaching to help fit the needs of my students.

Additionally, I know some American Sign Language (my grandparents were deaf, so I have been using it since I was a child) and some Spanish. I am very organized and professional, but also I have fun with my students and get to know them as well. I bring games and break up tutoring sessions with various activities, especially for the little ones. Since I have been teaching and tutoring I have acquired a variety of materials such as books, workbooks, manipulatives, games, etc. to use with my students. I do have several references, which are available upon request.

Because travel time takes away from the amount of students I am able to help, I have a home office/classroom where I see many of my students. I do have references that I am happy to provide upon request. You can find pictures of my "mini-classroom" in my profile pictures. All of my students find it to be a great learning environment. I welcome parents who want to visit before bringing their children here, and offer to have our initial meeting and assessment at your home, or another place, such as a library.

Thank you for reading my profile. I hope to work with you soon!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have worked with many students with ADD and ADHD. This can be a challenging situation, and each student is different. I am currently tutoring a student with ADD, and 2 students with ADHD. Additionally, I have had students in my class in past years with ADHD. I try to work closely with parents in order to help their children become successful learners. I have a few techniques I use to help give students intrinsic and extrinsic motivation to perform at their best. I try to mix up the tutoring session with different activities, recognize "burn-out" before it begins, and give students plenty of opportunities to be successful. I've found that this really builds confidence and can make tutoring sessions move smoothly and students gain more from the work they've completed.

Algebra 1

I have good experience with algebra and have helped many students understand the process. Many times students just need additional practice in order to become proficient. Other times, students need an explanation of "why." I can provide help for both of those needs.

I have worked with students who have many varying exceptionalities. To help any student with any specific need takes an assessment of that student and adaptation of lessons. I have had experience working with students with Aspergers, and feel confident that I can help struggling students learn.

I have worked with students with Autism for many years. Just this past year I had a student with Autism in my classroom and I worked closely with his mother, the VE specialist at the school and his speech therapist in order to give him the support he needed. Also, I have tutored students with Autism, one-on-one. While there are many spectra of Autism, I feel confident in my abilities to adapt my lessons to fit the needs of students with Autism.

I have tutored several students who have been diagnosed with dyslexia within the past 5 years. One of my most recent former students was diagnosed with dyslexia as well as ADD. I worked with him for 2 years and saw some great improvement with his decoding and reading abilities. Additionally, I have had students in my class who have been diagnosed with dyslexia. I use a differentiated approach to help these students become successful learners. My goal is to individualize their instruction in a way they can understand, and help to teach them how to approach things on their own in the future.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have just recently left the classroom (as of April 2012) where I was an elementary school teacher (2nd & 3rd grade) for the past 5 years. I graduated from the University of Central Florida with a Bachelor's in Elementary Education in 2006. Additionally, for more than 5 years, I worked for a private tutoring company after school and on weekends, working with primarily elementary students in all subject areas. Prior to teaching, I spent my Junior and Senior Internships in grades Kindergarten, 5th and 2nd. I also volunteered in a Pre-Kindergarten class over a span of 8 years while I was in high school and in college.

Elementary Math

I have been teaching elementary math both in the classroom as well as to individual tutoring students for more than 5 years. I have experience with Everyday Math, En Vision Math and Scott Foresman. Math looks very new and different these days to both students and parents. Many of my friends and family members come to me for advice on how to solve problems in the way that the program wants them to. I can definitely help with that, as well as teach students critical thinking skills for problem solving.

Elementary Science

As an elementary educator and tutor for the past 5 years I have had a lot of experience with teaching science to elementary school students. I realize that some students may not have the same love for science the way I do; however, I still try to make learning science fun.

I have several years of experience teaching English to language learners. There are many different influences from other languages, cultures and regions around the world. English is comprised of many different components, each one important to the others. I can help students see the relationships and find and identify "rules that don't follow the rules" within the English language.

Along with my Elementary Education teaching certificate, I have earned an ESOL endorsement. I have been diligent in keeping my professional development hours and requirements up-to-date for my certificate and ESOL endorsement. I work with ESOL students on a daily basis. During this past school year I had 3 students in my class who are ESOL. In previous years I've had anywhere from 4 to 8 ESOL students in my class, and have been able to effectively help those students with core curriculum.

Grammar can be a very difficult subject to learn. With so many rules, it's hard to remember them all. I will admit that as I was growing up and going through school, grammar was not my favorite subject for those very same reasons. It wasn't until I became an educator that I began to feel comfortable with grammar. I feel as though I can identify with my students who are struggling with grammar and help them with the tricks and strategies I have learned myself. I use the same approach with grammar as I do with reading: I begin with the most basic of needs my student has and work up from there. I try to "fill the gaps" before moving on to more complicated structures.

Hard Of Hearing

As I have stated in my free response, I do know American Sign Language and can use that to better help students with hearing impairments. While I have never worked one-on-one in a tutoring situation with a student with a hearing impairment, I have had students with hearing impairments in my class. I feel that I am comfortable and capable of helping hearing impaired students.

I have worked with many students who needed help with phonemic awareness, and phonemic recognition. Many of my students in my class needed help "filling the gaps" with phonics before they could become successful readers. Phonics are such an important part of reading. Phonemic awareness is the foundation for strong readers and good comprehension skills.

Pre-Algebra can be a confusing and frustrating subject for some students. I try to break down the steps and apply a "real-world" approach to learning not only HOW but WHY we need algebra. I feel that if students have a deeper understanding of number sense and critical thinking, then Algebra comes a lot easier to them. This approach has helped many of my students in the past. Most times, students just need a little extra practice and one-on-one coaching in order to become successful on their own.

Reading involves a lot of different components that all need to work together in order for a student to become a "good reader." When phonics and decoding skills are weak, it makes comprehension 10 times as difficult. No matter what age a student is, if there are "holes" in the foundation, reading will be more of a challenge. My approach is to begin with the most basic needs a student has and work up from there.

Special Needs

I have worked with many students with various needs both academically and emotionally. As a former classroom teacher, many of my students came to school with a wide variety of needs and varying degrees of need in all subject areas. It was my job to differentiate my instruction to meet those needs. As a tutor, I am able to focus my attention on one student at a time, and adjust my teaching style, pace and material for that specific student.

I will be the first to admit that I was always a terrible speller in school. It wasn't until I became an educator myself that I learned many of the "tricks" to spelling. I feel that having this difficulty as a child really helps me to understand where my students are coming from when they are having the same challenges with spelling. I use mnemonic devices, helpful hints and other strategies to help students having difficulties with spelling.

Study Skills

Good study skills do sometimes need to be taught. Even when I was a student in elementary school I found myself to be unorganized, forgetful, and spending hours "studying" without much payoff. Luckily, my mother and teachers helped me learn good study skills early on. Since then, I have become very organized and detailed. I also learned better ways to help me study more effectively. I have tutored several students who needed help with study skills. I try to use real examples and relevant information to help students see the importance of studying. It also usually helps students see that studying doesn't always have to be "hard." If you know a few tips and tricks, they can go a long way.

Vocabulary is a very important component of reading and writing and shows up on many state tests and entrance exams. My approach to vocabulary is exposure, exposure, exposure! I use repetition, related words and vocabulary used in context to help students learn and retain vocabulary knowledge.

Excellent Experience! — Working with Beth was an absolutely wonderful experience. When we moved to the area last summer, my daughter was effectively 2 grade levels behind in math and had deficiencies in some of the skill sets she had already learned. I had tried to help her, but the stress and frustration for both of us was negatively affecting our relationship. That's when we turned to WyzAnt and found Beth. At the beg ...
