About Cheryl

My focus is reading intervention, utilizing BLS (Basic Language Skills)-Dyslexia, phonemic awareness, and writing. Students will gain skills in decoding, spelling, and hand writing. Also can assist students in organizational skills.

I've worked in Special Education over 5 years and 5 years as an English teacher with college prep.

If lesson are canceled less that 24 hours prior to lesson, students will be charged full price of the tutorial session. Lessons canceled 24 hours in advance will not be charged.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

Special Education teacher - Certified in ECE (Early Childhood Education) through 4th grade. Also a Master in Special Education. Working with student with special needs and behavioral modification.

Aspergers

I am Special Education certified. I have worked with ADHD/ADD, Aspergers, functional autistic, visual and hearing impaired.

Dyslexia

I have 12 years experience working and tutoring. Presently I teach two dyslexia programs. Wilson and BLS (Basic Language Skills) are for 1s through High School. My primary focus is word decoding, vocabulary development, writing, and reading comprehension. My training background has been at Neuhaus in Houston and IRawson Saunders in Austin.

English

I am a Certified teacher. I have over 6 years experience teaching English, Pre-AP, and Gifted and Talented. My primary focus is vocabulary development, writing, and reading comprehension. Student's will also gain experience in test taking and EOC (End of Course) prep.

ESL/ESOL

I've worked with students at all levels to support English proficiency. Lessons focus on word meaning, correct sentence structures and vocabulary to support academic and conversational English.

Grammar

I can help with general English language structure (sentence structure, roots, affixes, and multi-syllable word parts. EC(Early Childhood) thru Adult.

Hard Of Hearing

I am Special Education certified. I have worked with students with a variety of disabilities in hearing and language support.

Phonics

I have skill in Wilson, BLS (Basic Language Skills), the foundations of reading and sound/letter recognition.

Reading

I can help with Reading intervention utilizing BLS (Basic Language Skills), Anita Archer-Rewards, multisyllabic words and decoding. Method used will depend on age and need of student.

Sewing

I've sewn since I was thirteen years old. I've taught summer sessions for elementary children through adult students.

Skills taught - Pattern reading and Machine mechanics (electronic and peddle machines, straight seams, zigzag, button holes, embroidery stitching, and more)
Skills for basic mending to tailored suits and alterations.

Special Needs

I have a Masters in Special Education. I have worked with special needs students for the past 10 years as an inclusion teacher, in small group, and in one-on-one sessions.

I've helped students learn to read as well as write, while also enhancing their reading comprehension. I have worked extensively in the following areas of special needs: ADHD, Aspergers, Dyslexia, Hearing Impaired, and Autism.

Study Skills

I can help with organization skills, test prep skills, note taking and testing methods that will improve students confidence and comprehension.

Vocabulary

I provide an introduction of word meanings and structure to improve students word knowledge and comprehension.

Writing

I am PreAP and Gifted certified for Middle School. I can help students with sentence structure, essay prep, thesis statements and development connecting writing for ACT and SAT writing. Basic structure and sentence formation. Vocabulary building with creative writing.
