About Kathryn

UNDERGRADUATE: My name is Kathryn, a biology fanatic who's traveled the globe! My love for science and all things aquatic began in junior high. From the moment I decided to major in marine biology at the age of 10, my dream never once changed. I graduated with a B.S. in Biology (marine & freshwater focus) from the #14 research university in the world, The University of Texas at Austin: "what starts here changes the world." It most certainly does! During my time at UT, I had the opportunity to complete coral reef research on the Great Barrier Reef, get our paper published in a research journal, and dive into seagrass research at Akumal, Mexico!

GRADUATE: From there I moved on to earn my master's degree in fisheries & mariculture from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, where I completed a 2.5 year research project on the ecology and black drum. Throughout my graduate degree, I taught classes ranging from microbiology, to marine ecology, to basic biology, working with students of all ages (pre-K through 65 years). I have excellent communication skills, and love working with others to better their understanding of any science topic. I find it rewarding not only to help others in their academic struggles, but also because it gives me the opportunity to challenge my own brain and keep it moving --something I found extremely important as we age! In between carrying out my love for teaching, you can find me having daily adventures participating in one of my many hobbies: scuba diving, traveling, competitive kayak racing, swimming, writing, running, woodwork, and photography!

Science has been my passion since a young age, being raised in the great outdoors and encouraged to explore to my heart's content. I have since been successful in all things science, ranging from science fair competitions, publications in scientific journals, a long list of research awards, and a passion for anything that involves field or lab work. I'm ready to tutor you in most any science subject!

ATHLETICS: I swam competitively all four years of high school, lettering in district championships my sophomore through senior years, also placing 1st in the 500m swim my senior year. In addition to competition, I got certified as a lifeguard at the age of 15, and have since kept up my certifications, advancing from lifeguard to lifeguard instructor. This includes all LG and CPR/First Aid/AED certifications. On top of all this, I have been scuba certified since 14 years old, and have advanced in many different diving areas, including scientific diver, boat, deep, night, and others. I believe in living a healthy lifestyle, and any sport that involves an aquatic environment is ideal for any and all age groups!

I'm confident in my ability to tutor in most any science topic, IN ADDITION TO MATH/READING/WRITING/SPEAKING, and others. I will work hard on my own time to make sure I'm ready to get you where you want to be in the subject! Feel free to contact me at any time via WyzAnt! I'm near my computer/phone/etc. pretty much 24/7, 365! I can provide you with a copy of my resume and/or curriculum vitae if requested.

Monica, thank you for your kind remarks, and showing flexibility in our tutoring session locations! I know rushing kids around to their after school activities is not an easy task. Your daughter is very intelligent, and I saw the drive she has in our STAAR review lessons. Be sure to tell her to never second guess her instincts! I'm looking forward to continuing our tutoring in the future and watching her excel as she prepares for junior high!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Advanced math subjects through high school and both degrees.

Botany

My experience in botany comes from a variety of classes I took while earning my undergraduate degree. In addition to these courses, I also completed a 3 week study abroad program covering marine botany that involved an extensive research paper and final presentation. During this time, I co-advised four other undergraduates and served as our botany research team leader. More information can be requested from my curriculum vitae, if contacted.

Career Development

During my graduate degree, I supervised undergraduate students in their career development outside of their time volunteering in the scientific lab. This involved advising them on graduate school applications, resumes/CVs, interview instruction, and general professional skills.

College Counseling

During my undergraduate degree, I volunteered at my church in college counseling, advising high school age students on their applications and preparations for college. I advised on everything from personal statements and essays, to general applications and professor followups. This also included SAT preparation.

During my graduate degree, I supervised undergraduate students in their graduate school applications, resumes/CVs, interview instruction, and general professional skills. This also included GRE preparation.

Fitness

Fitness is just one of my many passions in this wonderful life, having participated in/coached a large variety of sports and physical exercise since a young age. These include: volleyball, cross country, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, CrossFit, military PRT training, scuba diving, yoga, aqua aerobics, and more.

Macintosh

I am well-versed in using Macintosh computer systems, having learned the ins and outs of their use for almost eight years. In addition to their computer functions, I also have a large amount of experience (un)&installing/taking apart various processing parts such as harddrives, RAM, trackpads, etc.

Public Speaking

Public speaking is an essential tool in most, if not all, forms of careers in today's society. This involves the use of dictation, eye contact, articulation, and other skills to better any kind of effective presentation. My knowledge and skill stems from years of public speaking in sports teams, student organization officer positions, and as a graduate student. I have regularly given public talks and hosted discussions among groups from 1 to over 400 people in size, and for age groups from toddlers through senior citizens. Most of my experience comes from presenting at scientific conferences. While at graduate school, I personally advised and tutored many undergraduate students in public speaking. This involved requiring public speaking assignments for all of my students, and practicing their skills on a weekly basis. More information can be requested from my curriculum vitae, if contacted.

Study Skills

My well-rounded student experiences as an A-student in K-12th grades, undergraduate, and graduate degrees are perfect examples of how using a variety of effective study skills and methods improved upon not only my education/grades, but also other aspects of essential abilities such as time management. I very much enjoy spending time teaching others these study skills, and have done so in all of my teaching qualifications!

Swimming

I swam competitively all four years of high school, lettering in district championships my sophomore through senior years, also placing 1st in the 500m swim my senior year. In addition to competition, I got certified as a lifeguard at the age of 15, and have since kept up my certifications, advancing from lifeguard to lifeguard instructor.
