About Alan

I have taught math for more than 26 years at the college level, and can tutor math courses from the elementary level through middle and high school and the first two years of college. My favorite subjects to teach are trigonometry and calculus, but I have taught and enjoy explaining any topic for which I am shown genuine interest or concern. WyzAnt has endorsed me to tutor all STEM high school and college math subjects from Algebra through Differential Equations and Linear Algebra. I was also recently endorsed as a Wolfram Mathematica tutor as well.

My best successes are with students who are willing to listen and I have patience with any person who can interact calmly and answer questions honestly about what they do and do not understand. I do not just explain how to do a problem, but sincerely want my students to think about why they are having trouble understanding so I can help them "get it."

I have experience teaching and tutoring students with disabilities such as ADD, ADHD, dyslexia, and milder forms of autism. If you need advice on course-related test-taking or academic preparedness, I can help. Unfortunately, I do not do standardized test preparation for college entrance exams (such as the SAT, ACT, or GRE) at the present time, as there are local and national test preparation centers for these tests which are better equipped to help you.

With three university degrees in mathematics, I can help almost any math student succeed and help get you over the hurdles which may prevent you from doing well in that subject or other academic courses.

I will travel to visit with you for a one-hour tutoring session, but prefer not to travel more than ten miles from my residence without additional travel charges. Preferred tutoring locations include the student's home, school, or a local library (provided the library policies allow it). I prefer not to tutor anyone in a noisy or public place such as a coffee shop or restaurant.

You are welcome reach out to me via the WyzAnt service for more details or questions. I look forward to hearing from and working with you soon, but please do not reply unless you are serious about having me as a tutor or working to improve your chances of succeeding in your subject.

Thanks for reading and best of luck to you whether you choose me or not!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have taught most Precalculus math classes at the college level over the past decade. Although I specialize in the subjects closer to actual calculus (trigonometry and Precalculus), I am certainly able to help with earlier subjects. Also, I recently tutored all levels of math (grades 1-12) at a private tutoring center.

Algebra 2

I have taught all Precalculus math classes at the college level over the past decade. Although I specialize in the subjects closer to actual calculus (trigonometry and Precalculus), I can ably tutor Algebra 2 which is a prerequisite for these subjects. Also, I recently tutored all levels of math (grades 1-12) at a private tutoring center.

Calculus

I have taught the subject in a community college setting continuously since 2006 until I left my full-time teaching post in 2015. It is my favorite subject to teach and tutor, and one of the most important math subjects a student can study.

Differential Equations

As a long time instructor of the traditional three-semester calculus STEM college sequence, this subject is a natural next course. I have taught the subject several (but less than five) times in a community college setting using a well-respected textbook with success. The subject is a crucial one for any student wishing to pursue a study plan in science and engineering and math. It is also a very difficult subject to learn and requires expertise in the prerequisite courses which I have. It is also a challenging course to tutor and I look forward to and accept this challenge.

Elementary Math

I am certified by WyzAnt to tutor this subject and have tutored at this level at a local Mathnasium in 2015.

Finite Math

I have experience teaching this subject at a local community college (though it was 2006). I have taught and tutored the content of this course many times in a variety of courses which do not have the same title. As this class is for many students a terminal math class, I understand the needs of the student and would work to help him or her pass the first time.

Geometry

Geometry was the first class I ever took which taught me how to think carefully and got me excited about math. There are many geometry textbooks and approaches to teaching the subject, but my goal is to ground the student in the basic ideas and reasoning, regardless of the method of instruction. As this is a necessary class for future work in math, I respect the needs of the student in learning the subject. Before you consider hiring me as a geometry tutor, I would appreciate discussing with you the organization of your class. This will be helpful in determining whether I am the best person to help you.

Linear Algebra

As a long time instructor of the traditional three-semester calculus STEM college sequence, this subject is a natural next course. I have taught the subject several times in a community college setting using a well-respected textbook with success. The subject is a crucial one for any student wishing to pursue a study plan in engineering, science, the computer field, and math. It is also a very beautiful subject with many practical real-world applications (including differential equations), and I greatly enjoy explaining it. I look forward to tutoring this for any student in WyzAnt.

Mathematica

I have been a Wolfram Mathematica user since 2005 (version 5.2) in an academic and instructional setting, mainly to supplement calculus instruction. The software is a very complex package and its syntax is often a roadblock to any one trying to use it effectively. I now use version 11.0 (the most recent update) and could provide careful tutelage for any student needing to learn the basics of the program. (I do not claim to be an expert on this program, because it is too vast for any one person to completely master.) I also can instruct students on Wolfram apps, such as Wolfram Alpha and their subject specific apps.

Prealgebra

I am certified by WyzAnt to tutor this subject and have experience both teaching the subject in a classroom and tutoring it at a local Mathnaisum in 2015.

Precalculus

I have taught most Precalculus math classes at the college level over the past decade. Although I specialize in the subjects closer to actual calculus (trigonometry and Precalculus), I am certainly able to help with earlier subjects. Also, I recently tutored all levels of math (grades 1-12) at a private tutoring center.

Trigonometry

I have taught all Precalculus math classes at the college level over the past decade. I specialize in the subjects closer to actual calculus (trigonometry and Precalculus), and Trigonometry is one of my most favorite subjects to teach. I taught the subject both onsite and online at a local community college recently.
