Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

As a former middle school and high school English teacher, I have several years of experience in preparing students for tests and revisiting material. As an educator, I earned hundreds of hours of professional development to stay up to date on research based learning strategies. Also, as a tutor, I stay up to date on changes made by the ACT testing company. Lastly, unique to my tutoring practices, are my metacognition (reflection) activities. By reflecting on the learning process, students are able to use this research based strategy to absorb information faster and retain information longer.

Bible Studies

I earned an A in Survey of the Bible from Richard King High School in Corpus Christi, Texas, one of three schools in the whole state of Texas offering this course in 1989. Additionally, my Survey of the Old and New Testament (two semesters) teacher asked me to represent students by speaking to a local school board about this class offering. Further, over the past twenty years, I have lead and attended numerous Bible studies, retreats, mission trips, and conferences, nationwide and in the countries of Mexico, El Salvador, and Kenya. Not only am I a lifelong student of the Bible, but I also apply my English composition degree and teaching background as I teach Bible studies. Some of my Bible study methods include kinesthetic learning as well as mind maps and mind sketching. I believe I am equipped and qualified to tutor Bible studies.

Elementary (K-6th)

As a certified 6th-12th English teacher, I am aware of the basic needs that an elementary student has in order to advance to the next level. I have privately tutored elementary aged students, worked in a day care, and with elementary-aged children in volunteer settings.

Elementary Math

I have successfully tutored math students privately and in the public school system. I encourage students to use visuals and color coding to empower their learning.

Elementary Science

Science is fun! Because science is based on lots of concepts and basic facts, I can teach strategies such as Thinking Maps, a great visual tool, and Foldables, a great visual and tactile tool, to help students grasp the subject quickly and with ease.

English

I am a certified English teacher, and I enjoy reading and writing. Grammar is fun, too, and it helps in both reading and writing. I have creative ways to help you learn all of these. Get ready for success!

ESL/ESOL

I love to work with people who want to learn English. Learning languages is fun and exciting.

I myself understand how it feels to learn a new language. I am semi-fluent in Spanish, and I picked up a few phrases in Swahili too. I have been to Mexico, El Salvador, and Kenya.

As a certified English teacher and one who has worked with ESL students in the past, I understand the hindrances and the needs you have.

Please let me join you on your journey to learning English!

GED

As a certified high school English teacher, I am aware of the subjects, requirements, test strategies associated with the GED. I have tutored dozens of hours helping adults prepare for their GEDs as well as for other similar tests.

General Computer

Computers are one of my favorite hobbies. From Word to Excel to PowerPoint to search engines to photo enhancement software to blogs to social media, there's always something new to discover. Good computer skills are important to have in our society and especially in the workplace. I have been using computers since I was a child (I even wrote my own programs in BASIC computer language). Being a certified English teacher also helps me to teach computer skills step by step.

Grammar

With a B.A. in English and teaching certification, I have taught reading and writing for several years. My experiences have prepared me to address grammar concerns from the most basic to the more complex. Using multiple methods such as sentence diagramming, Image Grammar (TM), and mentor text, together we will find the strategies that best fit your needs.

Literature

As an English major, I completed a number of literature classes including American and British Lit. Tutoring college students on a daily basis for almost three years, I coached them in writing their essays, mainly over literary analysis and reader response topics. I am familiar with many English and humanities college course literary works due to the hundreds of tutoring hours I provided at the college level.

Microsoft Excel

Excel can be tricky, but it's fun once you learn the basics. I can help with items such as sorting, formatting, concatenation, mail merges for letters or reports and much more. I also have helpful links for those complicated formulas.

Microsoft Outlook

I am a proficient user of Outlook. I have used Outlook on a daily basis at work for over 8 years. I have had professional training, but I am also self-taught. I know how to use advanced features and personalize settings. I also use my certified English teacher degree to help me compose professional emails.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have been using PowerPoint for personal and business purposes for over 15 years. I have also taken PowerPoint professional development classes at Tarrant County College. Learning advanced tips has allowed me to work faster and prepare quality presentations. Having been a workshop designer and presenter, I understand the importance of not only knowing the skills to create a PowerPoint, but also the design aspects to reach one's target audience.

Public Speaking

Standing nervously in front of my middle school peers, I dreaded giving yet another speech. The scene was the same in high school, when I thought I would throw up in front of the class because I had to give a long presentation. Fast forward twenty-six years later. Now, I am a certified English teacher, who has been using her public speaking skills in the classroom for several years. Addtionally, I have been in education for fifteen years and have used these skills in various capacities. Upon request, (yes, the once timid middle school kid was invited to speak) I have given numerous presentations, including professional development for two different school districts and a local college. Further, by consulting one-on-one with a number of teachers, I have helped them improve their public speaking skills as well. Knowing what I have overcome, it is my desire and pleasure to help others achieve the same and more!

Reading

Reading is an important foundation and skill to have. I use many proven strategies including context clues, KWL (know/want/learn), text connections, graphic organizers, Thinking Maps, and Foldables to help students to be successful in their reading. As a certified English teacher I understand how reading affects all other subject areas and how to be an effective reader in those areas.

SAT Writing

Having taught middle school, high school, and college writing, I am aware of students' needs and expectations regarding tests. Over the years, I have prepared hundreds of students for TAAS, TAKS, STAAR, ACT, and SAT tests, which helps me to equip my current students with the test taking skills they need.

Additionally, I regularly read educational articles and stay current on official test changes to the SAT and related effects on higher education. These are the many qualifications that I apply in my sessions for SAT writing.

STAAR

I am qualified to tutor STAAR since I have taught and tutored the TAAS and TAKS tests for several years. I also developed and facilitated a TAKS writing academy for three years, so I have an understanding of this level of state testing. Lastly, I use the Texas Education Agency website to continue to inform myself of changes and requirements regarding STAAR. For example, I am aware of the deeper writing requirements at the higher grade levels such as Persuasive Writing, Short Answer Connecting Selections, and Short Answer Single Selection.

Study Skills

I have many study skills to offer that I have learned from several years of professional development as well as personal development in my classroom. I can teach mind mapping, mind sketching, foldables (hands-on tool), brainstorming, critical thinking, self-editing, note-taking, correct highlighter usage, organizing, color coding, graphic organizers, and more.

Tennis

I have played tennis on/off for more than 25 years. I played on Jr. High and High School tennis teams. I coached Jr. Varsity High School Tennis one season.

TOEFL

As a former employee at Tarrant County College, I have developed test prep materials and coached many students to prepare for their TOEFL exams, including reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Not only do I address the academic content, but also the needs of the test taker, including test strategies and test anxiety.

Writing

Writing is fun!

As a certified English teacher, I enjoy writing stories, poems, resumes, letters, essays, and many other kinds of writing. You get to express your thoughts and feelings and your beliefs and ideas.

You can influence others and make a difference. Communication is an important skill in life and writing is crucial communication skill to possess.

You will use it in all other subjects, in the future, in your job quest and in your career.
