About John

I have traveled a bit around the world. I know basic Spanish and I am very familiar with all types of cultures.
I am a substitute counselor and substitute elementary teacher for Comal ISD.

I have been an Army engineer, university professor, public school teacher and school counselor. My experience includes psycho-therapy, teaching and tutoring dyslexic students and grant writing.

I have taught at the elementary level and have done testing will all ages. I used the Hooked on Phonics and MTA methods with many students and had great success.

I have done book editing and have written extensively. Last year I was a Grant Counselor for an Elementary School in Comal Country.

My ability to listen to the student and parents, plus my love for learning, makes me a very effective teacher. My experience as a psychologist and an internationally certified life coach makes me an ideal tutor for students of any age.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have had much success teaching school age children as well as adults diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. As a psychologist I tested individuals to determine various disabilities and developed techniques to help students learn in spite of their ADD-ADHD. I had have been successful using a hands on approach to the subject matter and allowing the students to harness their energy for good rather than harm. It is amazing how much can be accomplished when energy is focused in the right direction.

Dyslexia

I taught the dyslexia program at an elementary school for two years. I received special training at SMU on the MTA, multi-sensory teaching approach, that was designed specifically for children with dyslexia. I had much success with the program during my two years teaching at the elementary school. I understand how difficult it can be for students who have difficulty with reading and writing. I overcame dyslexia and have accomplished much in my life.

Elementary (K-6th)

I taught at the elementary school level for three years and I was a counselor at the same level for an additional 4 years. I was a middle school counselor for about 10 years. I am fully certified for pre-k-8, in the State of Texas, with emphasis on early childhood development. I taught elementary teachers at the graduate level at the University of Texas at Brownsville. I am very good at communicating with young children. I am able to teach children just about any concept using songs, poems, games, art, and through watching how they learn.

Phonics

I have taught phonics to hundreds of students with superb results. I studied the MTA method at SMU. I also used the Hooked on Phonics method with kindergarten students with marvelous results. I am very qualified to tutor phonics. I would be able to help just about any student with phonics in the English language. I have an amazing track record of success in this area.

Reading

I am a qualified reading tutor as well. My experience includes: teaching at elementary level, university level, school counselor, certified life coach, psychologist, LPC, father of 6 grown children and husband of a wonderful teacher.

Study Skills

I am uniquely qualified to teach study skills because I have taught these skills to elementary, middle, high school and College students for over 20 years. I have a real gift for helping students to arrange their study time, area, books, and other possessions in a manner that helps to facilitate useful study. I perfected these techniques during my time in college, engineering school, graduate school and while working on my doctorate in counseling psychology. I also taught the 7 habits time management courses through Covey.
