About Phillip

Do research papers cause arguments at home? Are spelling words a source of frustration and anxiety? I can help.

Often poor grades can be overcome with better reading and comprehension skill. I can help pinpoint the root of the issue and strengthen a student's ability to solve problems on their own.

I have a Master Tutor Certification from the College Reading and Learning Association, and a Bachelor's degree in Creative Writing (and 44 hours of law school.)

I tutored with Texas A&M University's Writing Center for three years, tutoring college students from every discipline on campus. I love the written word, and I enjoy helping others learn to love it, as well. English construction rules can feel arbitrary and confusing. I provide a comfortable environment where students can forget their apprehension over the rules and bring out the excellent reader and writer within.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I attended International Bible College in San Antonio, TX from Aug 1997-May 1998.

I was volunteer youth and children's pastor for my church from Nov 97-Sept 98

I was the paid youth pastor for Oak Meadows UMC in San Antonio, TX from Aug 2000- March 2001.

I was a small group leader and Sunday School teacher for Aaran Lakes Baptist Church in Fayetteville, NC from January 2007 - December 2009. I only stopped because military orders took me out of the area.

English

I have a BA in English with a Writing Concentration. I tutored at Texas A&M's University Writing Center for two years, where I earned a Master Tutor Certification. I am also a law student, which demands the highest writing skills.

Political Science

In addition to undergraduate college courses in Federal and Texas political science, I have completed 44 hours of law school.

Public Speaking

As a tutor with the Texas A&M Writing Center, I often conducted oral presentations to classrooms of 80-100 students, without hesitation or problem.
In law school, nearly every professor requires us to stand and respond to questions publicly, which further hones public speaking skill.
I was also a non-commissioned officer for five years in the US Army, where I was often called upon to lead classes on a variety of topics.

Reading

I have a Master's degree in Tutor Certification- College Reading and Learning Association. I am a Writing/Reading tutor with the TAMU Writing Center (paid on-staff tutors). I have a Bachelor's degree in English from Texas A&M University.

STAAR

I have helped several young students (5th grade) to move from failing the test to exceeding expectations. I also have a daughter in the 8th grade whom I helped exceed the standard in all of her tested areas on the STAAR tests. I have a Master Tutor Certification from the College Reading and Learning Association, and a Bachelor's degree in Creative Writing (and 44 hours of law school).

Study Skills

I maintained a 3.5 with over 150 undergraduate hours. I have taken college classes from a combat zone (Baghdad, Iraq), and I have 44 hours of law school, which requires no less than a 3-1 ratio of studying. I have honed study skills through very difficult environments and performed well under those environments. I have a Master Tutor Certification from the College Reading and Learning Association, and a Bachelor's degree in Creative Writing (and 44 hours of law school).
