I have been a teacher since 1979. I have taught American History at the college level, and I have taught special education English and history in high school. I just returned from an exhilarating teaching experience at an orphanage in the bush of Uganda. The orphanage has about 550 primary students and 60 high schoolers. I chose the older kids as that is the group I relate to.
In addition to academic subjects, I have studied the Bible very carefully for both personal inspiration and direction and to learn the true meaning behind the Hebrew and Greek.
All that sounds like big stuff, maybe, but my experience teaching special ed students has taught me to teach with simplicity. There is no subject to deep to be easily explained. I believe I do that.
My best qualities, however, are that I am a listener and rather than teaching, I facilitate learning. That is, I help my students to discover for themselves what I could simply spoon feed them. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have had a special ed certification since 1990. I have worked in the classroom with those diagnosed with Aspergers and have had really great relationships with them. Two children, in particular, I had much success with.
I am a certified special ed teacher in Texas. I have been teaching reading and English since 1989 to kids and adults who are having a hard time reading because they have not been taught that letters are trustworthy. They say what they said they would say. Sometimes letters jump around, but you can figure that out. Confidence is the main thing. The rest can be taught. Trust the letters.
