I want your child to succeed. I know it's been hard, and they don't always understand. But they will. I can put my 24 years of elementary teaching experience, College Prep High school courses, as well as five years of Math, Natural and Human Science intensive college courses, to work to help you. Together, we'll find the methods, and take the time necessary, to help accomplish their goals.
I've worked with all age groups, and really enjoy teaching. It's always been my greatest joy, seeing the light of understanding click on in my student's eyes. Sometimes it takes time, sometimes a little patience, but eventually, those questions will be answered and they will move forward. I can't say I have a certain "method" in tutoring, it really depends on the student. Some people learn better reading along, some appreciate visual aids, while others need repetitive displays. We will explore all the avenues of assimilation and retention until we find the one that fits your child.
I look forward to assisting on the path to learning! I want your child to succeed. I know it's been hard, and they don't always understand. But they will. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have 24 years of experience working with small groups of elementary students, as well as in one-on-one tutoring. I have also homeschooled my own nine children. I have taught and tutored in all subjects, from pre-K to Eighth Grade, including mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, spelling and health. Having been a nursing major in college for three years, I have a strong background in college prep and university math and science. Spelling, reading and phonics are areas that are particularly close to my heart, as my daughter learned to read when she was three years old, but has had some difficulty with spelling. She is making tremendous progress through thorough phonics work, and this has developed in me a real passion for helping children excel in these areas. Having traveled to three continents has also helped develop a well-rounded worldview, which I feel can bring special insight and depth to a social studies curriculum. Finally, I feel that with my academic background, as well as my work within a year-long extensive CNA training program followed by several years of hospital experience, that I can be a great benefit toward assisting students in understanding health and human science-related subjects.
Over the past 24 years of schooling experience, I have worked with a number of pre-K, and older, students using various reading programs. It has been fascinating to me how a graduated program of phonics is tremendously successful toward making reading progress, and by applying certain principles, step-by-step methodology, as well as repetition and other tools, children read at an exceptionally early age, or make great progress at an older age. Any child can learn to read!
All of my children learned to read at home by the age of three, and I have used a number of reading programs and methods with my students during my educational career, including Montessori, Abeka, Ladybird and Christian Light. I have found that the best combination for success is strengthening phonics skills, and repetition of sight words. I use flash cards with younger ages, sometimes with a bit older as well, depending on the level and need.
