About Britt

I'm a homeschool mom with a school teacher husband. We LOVE to learn. We are constantly reading and studying ourselves and love how that education pours out to the people around us. Our children have learned from us, not to follow our passions, but to find what they are passionate about and find the motivation to learn everything they need to do what they want to do. Sometimes amidst tests and frustrations and textbooks, we forget how amazing and fun learning can be. I want to see the spark come back in a student's eyes as they realize they can learn and they want to learn.

I played volleyball at Brigham Young University and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology. I then served a mission in South Africa.

I have worked in special education as an interpreter and as a teacher. I have also taught in schools, private schools, coops and churches. I love to figure out how people learn.

I specialize in the subjects I love most: math, American Sign Language and English.

I love understanding how math is used in our daily lives. It motivates students to know how they would use math in their lives. I have found that a solid foundation of basic skills gives a person confidence. The advantage of a tutor in math is I can understand where challenges lie and where help is needed so we can progress at the student's pace.

I worked as an ASL interpreter in preschool through high school level, as well as at church and scout functions. I minored in ASL in college. I have also taught ASL in small groups.

I have studied the bible for over 20 years. I'm rereading it this year. I like to read Jewish commentary as well as books from other religions to help me better understand the Bible. It's still the most commonly quoted book with beautiful poetry, thought provoking stories and life changing challenges.

Public speaking can give a student confidence. When they have a well organized speech, are prepared and practiced, they are set up for success to accomplish something difficult.

I would love to help you meet your subject with interest and confidence.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Aspergers

My own son is on the spectrum and fits in about the Aspergers level. He's an amazing young man. Watching him learn and learning with him what works rounded out my experience in a unique way. I had taught in special ed classrooms before and served as a teacher's aid. Teaching and learning with my son was a wonderful experience in how an Asperger child grows and changes.

Autism

I worked in a special ed classroom as a teacher and an aid. I have worked with children who are non-verbal to verbal and all along the spectrum. I am sensitive to the gifts and sensitivities of autistic children and adults.

Bible Studies

I attended a Bible studies class for 2 years in highschool. I took classes in Bible studies in college. I served as a missionary, teaching from the Bible for 18 months. I have read the entire Bible 4 times.

Hard Of Hearing

I have taught special education, served as a teacher's aid and as an ASL interpreter I have worked with hard of hearing individuals in all their unique forms and with their very individual communication needs and styles.

Sign Language

I minored in ASL in college. I interpreted ASL in public school helping students in grades pre-k through highschool. I taught special ed students using ASL. I taught a homeschool coop class in ASL.

Special Needs

I have taught in a special education classroom. I have also worked as a teacher's aid in a special education classroom. I have worked with a variety of disabilities and needs including different communication styles and mobilities as well as autism and deafness.

Volleyball

I played volleyball at Brigham Young University from 1989 to 1992. I keep up with it with my husband who coaches high school volleyball. My husband and I still play volleyball together as often as possible.
