Dear Students and Parents,
Hello! My name is Karen A. I am an energetic and motivated 55 yr. old woman with many years of experience when working with students and meeting their educational needs. I have a compassion for students, especially when engaging in their educational needs and to help them grow to be confident, and build autonomy. In the past I have spent several years as a Resource Paraprofessional working at an elementary school, ESL classroom at a middle school, and in the resource and in school suspension classroom at a high school. I have worked with a multitude of students when strategizing homework obstacles, developing time management and study skills. I enjoy the interaction with all ages of students. My self-gratification is observing a student smile when accomplishing their educational needs. I think tutoring students speaks great volumes when you are able to witness their educational accomplishments. The students I have tutored in the past have had successful educational outcomes.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As I grew I was very active in church especially in the youth group, went to camps, helped with the smaller children when teaching Sunday school, and participated in all the events and fund raisers for the youth group. I taught Sunday school when my daughter was growing up, I also was active in the youth program when she was in high school. I am a spiritual and religious person, attend church and read daily scriptures. I think the education I received as I was growing up within the church ministries I would like to enlightened and reach out to children to recognize and contribute the importance of finding the Lord and His teachings.
I have had a lot of experience in the school setting with elementary, middle, and high school students. I worked in the resource room to assist the students with their homework, I would explain the instructions to the students and outline the common core ideas of the expectations in order to complete the assignment. Not only did I review the common core ideas but I had the students write them down so the students could reflect upon what is expected of them in order to complete the assignment and help them understand how to complete the assignment.
The common core ideas is a list of activities and/or expectations when completing a task successfully.
As young as I could remember I loved to draw, I took drawing class in middle and high school. I use to sit and draw with the students when they were done with their homework. I remember when I worked in the Resource room at the elementary school, I actually drew and cut out a life-like giraffe that the students put up in the classroom and they used it to put their stars on when they completed their assignments. I laminated it and the teacher used it for several years thereafter and the students enjoyed having it in the classroom. I also would sit and draw with my daughter, drawing is very therapeutic, because you don't have to draw anything specific, just need a pencil and plain paper and let your imagination run. I would do that with some of the high school students when they were feeling stressed and I would have them close their eyes and just draw on the paper what they were feeling. The students loved this way of letting go some of their anger. I sit and draw with my grandchildren. I utilized drawing when I was doing mental health therapy with some of the kids that had suicidal thoughts, they would actually draw what they were thinking and how they were feeling. I also utilized drawing when doing therapy with kids that were sexually abused, a great way to release their feelings. Drawing is a huge part of my life, because I have utilized the technique in so may ways and open different opportunities for me to deliver ways drawing is effective to the mind, body, and soul.
I feel that I would be qualified to tutor in this specific area, because in the past I have worked with students K- 6th grade regarding all subjects, and also I am presently substitute teaching in the Port Arthur ISD K-6th grade. I feel that my tutoring skills would be beneficial to assisting students in K-6th in order to achieve their educational and personal goals. Also, I feel starting students within this age group to have consistency and organization skills will enhance their motivation when achieving their educational needs.
Fitness has been a huge part of my life, I worked 3 fitness gyms in Nebraska as a Assistant Operations Manager, I lived, breathed, and sometimes slept fitness. My daughter has diabetes, so it's very important for her to exercise. I also lost my sister to diabetes, our family eats healthy all the time. I go to the gym on a regular basis and regulate, and my calorie intake daily. Fitness is part of my life and I would love to share my experience with getting healthy and control of my weight, and living a manageable lifestyle by going to the gym and eating healthy.
I have been told that I have very pretty and legible handwriting. When I attended school, I took great pride in my handwriting by completing all my homework and tests with legible handwriting. I have practiced this belief to the present and when I'm writing a note, letter, and/or instructions I want the other person to be able to understand what I have written without questions. When I was a paraprofessional in the elementary school I would assist the students with their handwriting. I also worked with mentally challenged students when improving their handwriting.
