I began my teaching career over 50 years ago and have taught everything from Preschool to college classes. I love sharing information and enjoy helping others understand new concepts and gain new skills. I am a very outgoing person and caring person. I am also tenacious, when I take on a project I want to see it through to the end. I am very innovative and look for an individual way to reach my students.
My favorite thing about teaching is when "the light bulb comes on" and you can see on your students' face that understanding and comprehension and they want to know morel Last spring I tutored at the local elementary school and we had a great growth rate for these struggling students in just 14 weeks with as little as 20 minutes, three times a week with me!
Reading and English were my favorite subjects as a student and as a classroom teacher In my administrative role, one of my main responsibilities was to work with the Reading and English teachers for the district as a specialist and resource for them. I also served as a librarian at both the middle and elementary school levels and have a wide knowledge of genres to share with my students.
I served as the testing coordinator for Brenham ISD for over 5 years. I moved the district from the TAAS test to the TAKS test and am very familiar with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for all subject areas. I have aligned curriculum to these standards for many years and have developed activities to teach these skills. Additionally, I was the administrator for a grant at Blinn College that targeted recruiting GED students to assist them in preparing for the GED, enroll in a technical class, gain a skill and move into the work force.
Ready to start? So am I! I can't wait to begin this journey with students and parents to increase success! My teaching philosophy is that everyone can learn and achieve, we just don't all do it in the same way and in the same time frame. There is no shame in asking for help...I have to do it often in lots of areas of my life. Let's work together to make learning easier and fun! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
