My teaching experience spans pre - kindergarten to high school. I have taught 17 years and have worked at public, private and parochial schools. During my career, I've taught multiple subjects and worked with students of various academic, ethnic and economic backgrounds. I currently work with students who have learning difficulties. The learning challenges of students include brain injuries, attention deficit, autism, and dyslexia. Subjects I have taught are reading, grammar, writing, elementary math, American and World history, as well as, life skills. I hold Texas certifications in reading and self contained for first through eighth grade.
I believe each person can achieve their personal level of success. My experience has taught me that one students highest level of academic success can be different than his/her classmate. I believe by using effective methods and meeting students needs everyone can achieve their individual best. I enjoy building relationships with my students and their families. Family and friends describe me as an optimist with a spirit of tenacity. Co-workers consider me friendly, cooperative and extremely patient. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have worked one-on-one and in small groups with children who have been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. I used curriculum that met their specific needs and interests. My Master's case study was "Reading Fluency and the ADHD child." I conducted research through articles and through the use of several methods while working with a student.
At my current job, I have worked with an Aspergers student for three years. During this time, I taught several subjects. I've developed an understanding of his needs and pace his lessons accordingly.
I earned a certificate for teaching teens and children with dyslexia from Direct Learning, Inc. In my current position, I have worked with several students with dyslexia. I've been trained in different curricula specific for dyslexic students. I found this curricula is successful with other students as well.
I hold teaching certifications from the state of Texas in four areas. I received lifetime certifications in reading and self-contained for grades 1-8 in 1996. Later, I earned an Early Childhood certification and an ESL certification for grades PK-8. My teaching experience with elementary age students, in public or private schools, spans over 10 years.
I hold a certificate for teaching reading for grades 1-8. I received phonics training through undergrad and graduate courses, as well as through staff development. I have experience using different curricula for teaching phonics to elementary age students over the years.
I am certified by the state of Texas to teach reading for first through eight grade. Teaching others to become life long readers is a personal and professional goal. Some of my most rewarding experiences have been seeing a student's perspective of reading become one of enjoyment instead of burden. I taught reading in public, private and Christian schools.
