About Corey

Scriptor vobis salutationes mittit!

Each of us goes about learning a little differently. I believe that the true educator notices this and shapes his lessons accordingly. I try my best to be that sort of tutor; when I see my students learning and genuinely loving it, I know that I've succeeded.

I am a graduate of the University of Texas at Arlington, where I studied Philosophy and Classics. Since 2010, I have tutored Latin and Logic independently, and in 2012 I was the Latin Instructor at UTA's own Upward Bound Math and Science summer program.

The subjects I'm most comfortable tutoring are: Latin, Logic, Ancient Greek, and English (Writing and Reading).

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Classics

During my undergrad, for which my minor was Classics, my focus ranged from classical philosophy (Presocratics, Plato, Aristotle, up through the Atomists, Stoics, and Epicureans) to Greek tragedy (Sophocles, Euripides, and Aeschylus). I continue to do reading on classical culture and philosophy. When I go to grad school, my MA will most likely be in this subject.

Latin

I began working with the Latin language in 2001, and have since translated various writers including Abelard, Beade, Caesar, Cicero, Heloise, Ovid, Quintilian, Virgil. During my undergrad, when my minor was in the Classics, I continually earned perfect scores on my assignments. Currently, I read the language daily in order to keep my understanding sharp for grad school, where I intend to get my Masters in Classics (Latin and Greek).

Logic

My undergrad my major was in philosophy, which required that I learn extensively about logical operations, validity, and symbolic representation of arguments. I was taught classical and modern logics, sentential and symbolic logic. Since graduating, I have tutored logic independently and worked to expand my knowledge of this subject.

Martial Arts

Practicing since 2001:

Judo, Kenjutsu, Haike ryu Jujitsu 2001-2004

Northern Longfist, Tan Tuei 2004-present
Lineage information may be provided upon request.

I may recommend students who have advanced beyond my capabilities to my own teacher.

Philosophy

I have a summary understanding of most authors from the presocratics through the moderns, and read philosophical texts continually.

Strengths: ancient philosophy, philosophy of language, epistemology

Favorites: Plato, Aristotle, Epictetus, Hume, Husserl, Russell, Searle, Chalmers
