About George

I taught English and reading and was an administrator for 31 years. After retirement I developed the Tutoring and Enrichment program at Union Gospel Mission in Ft Worth. For the last year and half, I've been an adjunct teacher of developmental reading and writing at Weatherford College. In 2013 I received the Judy S. Richardson "Literacy as a Living Legacy" Award from the Association of Literacy Educators and Researchers. I've never discovered who put me up for this prestigious award.
I have devoted my life to working with children and adults to improve their reading and writing skills. Learning has to be fun for the student and teacher alike. Children learn and comprehend more when they are actively engaged in the learning and being successful at the same time.

As a student I struggled with English and reading. Because of this I know the struggles students go through in mastering language skills. I developed and implemented grammar packets for students that make understanding relationships wit parts of speech easy to understand. These packets have been used in both regular and Special Ed class with great success.

Reading is fun, it will take you places around the world. Writing is easy once you learn the fundamentals and get over the fear of making mistakes.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

During my years in public schools I spent 19 years teaching Junior High English. After retirement, I put together and implemented the Tutoring and Enrichment program at Union Gospel Mission, Ft Worth. We had 176 students take the state mandated STARR Test. Two boys failed one section the first year. The majority of our students were recognized or had perfect scores.

Writing

I have taught writing grades 4-12 in public schools and Developmental Writing at the Community College level for 33 years My students have always been successful, scoring in the top 10% of their grade level. At the community college level my students have been successful when they moved to freshman English.

My elementary math students have scored in the top 5% of their grade level on the STARR test.
