As a tutor, I seek to help my students develop intellectually. I understand that each mentee has a different personality in terms of learning as well as different academic and career goals. No matter where they might be in their journey, I aspire to help them develop certain universal skills—asking the right questions, staying persistent, and communicating effectively. I will proactively engage and regularly give the students feedback. But at the same time, I will allow them as much independence as possible to express their creativity. The process of getting better at anything requires multiple iterations of failure and growth. I hope to engage in this process with them as they work on their assignments. I also help my mentees set deadlines for assignments and stick by them. This is a critical skill for them to learn as they progress in school/college.

My earliest experience of tutoring was in 2005 while I was an undergraduate at Lake Forest College. I tutored two students in the General Chemistry class. Next year, I was a teaching assistant for a course called Medical Mysteries in Neuroscience where I helped a class of approximately 25 students learn about the quandaries of the human brain. As I became a junior in college, in 2007, I was a teaching assistant for cell and molecular biology as well as its associated laboratory portion of the course. When I went to graduate school, in 2011, I was a TA for a more advanced cell and molecular biology course with rigorous learning from original research papers in contrast to straight forward didactics from a textbook. More recently, from 2015 to 2016, I mentored three undergraduates and 1 graduate student in cognitive neurology research when I was a post-doctoral research fellow at Northwestern University in Chicago, IL. And lastly, in 2019, I mentored two undergraduates in neuro-oncology research working as a research scientist at the University of Texas at Austin. The mentoring as a post-doc and as a research scientist consisted of teaching students about the know

Genetics,

Genetics

I have strong foundational knowledge in genetics, first from taking molecular genetics class as an undergraduate but then acquiring hands-on experience in a research lab. These experiences broadly entailed in vitro, in vivo and in silico research. I have learned various genetic engineering, and molecular biology techniques (e.g., virus-mediated expression, mutagenesis, DNA cloning, DNA sequencing, PCR assays, southern/northern/western blotting, Chip-Seq, and RNA-seq).
