Hello! My name is Hunter. I'm currently a PhD student in math at UT Austin. I have over 5 years of teaching experience in college level mathematics -- mostly in calculus and linear algebra. I also have 3 years of experience mentoring advanced undergraduate math students 1-on-1 in various subjects including cellular automata, topology, dynamical systems, and measure theory.

A lot of math is taught in ways that can obfuscate what is really going on. There are too many formulas and ideas that don't seem to connect into one coherent picture. This is not how math is supposed to work. Everything ought to connect from one subject area to another. My teaching style thus focuses on uniting concepts across mathematical disciplines by uncovering the basic principles underlying them. Ultimately, this strategy utilizes something called "chunking" which is essential in learning. It allows us to organize and categorize ideas, making them far easier to remember.

Such an endeavor is best done by someone who knows the math deeply -- someone who connects the ideas of calculus and linear algebra, suggests the right intuition, and gives an approach tailored to a student's specific background.

In short -- my teaching strategy focuses on ideas rather than methods. Once the idea is well understood, the methods come naturally.

Here is a quote from my student evaluations on teaching.

"I'm going to be perfectly honest, Hunter had no greatest strength. I do not hesitate with pointing out flaws on surveys, however Hunter was always upbeat, perfectly knowledgeable, always accessible, and had a passion for math and linear that I had never witnessed before. Everything was a strength for him. If not for Hunter, my overall outlook on the subject and the class would have been much worse, and I am eternally grateful that he was my TA."

If you're struggling in a class, or just want to improve your understanding of a math subject, please contact me! I am quite flexible.

Discrete Math,

Discrete Math

As a mathematician, discrete mathematics is the bread and butter of my every day. My background consists of years of experience writing rigorous and complete proofs, a common emphasis in most discrete mathematics classes. I also have a couple of years of experience with the common topics of most discrete math classes, such as combinatorics, graph theory, discrete probability theory (such as Markov chains), and group theory.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

I have multiple years of experience teaching linear algebra to undergraduates, as well as a solid underlying theoretical understanding of the ideas and intuition behind the subject.
