Working on an individual basis, it's possible to see where the student is getting stuck and concentrate on that. As much as I like teaching classes, there's limited opportunity to help each and every student. The individual interaction is what I like most about tutoring.

Long experience has given me perspective and helped me focus on the main concepts. Math can be challenging because your brain has to decode a bunch of symbols. That processing can make it difficult to maintain a train of thought from beginning to end of the problem you're solving. I can help keep you grounded.

In the past, I've worked as a software developer using other languages. In my most recent position at AT&T, I did data analysis using Python for a year. Usage all day, every day during that period really solidified my grasp of the language, along with essential packages such as numpy and pandas.

These days, data is king- and there's lots of it. Increasingly, this will be the case in every industry.

I can help you develop the math skills you need in our data-driven world: statistics, which allows you to summarize data in meaningful ways; calculus and linear algebra, which are essential in machine learning.

R

R

As a data scientist at AT&T, R was part of my toolset for statistical analysis. I used R itself to perform the work and R Markdown to report on the results and the methodology. I was active in the R users group in Austin when it was meeting regularly.

Statistics

Statistics

In my Operations Research PhD program, I took courses in Mathematical Statistics and Regression. I supplemented that with an online course in Bayesian Statistics (Coursera) and Exploratory Data Analysis (Udacity). During my career at AT&T, I worked as a Data Scientist. Statistics is a crucial tool in Data Science.

Discrete Math,

Discrete Math

For my Computer Science bachelor's degree (NC State University), I took four courses that are directly pertinent to discrete mathematics: (1) Discrete Mathematics in Computer Science (2) Graph Theory (3) Symbolic Logic and (4) Analysis of Algorithms. For my Operations Research PhD (University of Texas-Austin), I had coursework in Combinatorial Optimization- in which the objects under study are by definition discrete. The text is Combinatorial Optimization by Papadimitrou and Steiglitz.
Linear Algebra,

Linear Algebra

I have a math PhD from Northwestern University. I taught Linear Algebra several semesters in a row at University of Texas. I came to like Linear Algebra more and more each time I taught the class.

Very knowledgeable

He is a great tutor and teacher. He knows his stuff and coaxes the thinking out of the student so they truly begin to understand. My son's comment after his first session is that he wished his teacher was this good.

Focused and organized tutoring

There are a lot of great tutors on Wyzant, but some of them have a tendency to go on tangents or try to rely on their experience to have an ad hoc lesson instead of preparing material. This is not the case with Matthew. He is very focused on the topic at hand, and he takes the time to put together well organized lessons. In one lesson, he was unable to help with a problem within the allotted lesson time, and to my surprised, he sent me an incredibly detailed follow up document a day or two later outlining exactly how the problem could be solved and why the solution worked. That he went to that much extra effort to make sure that nothing was left unsolved really impressed me. Few others would take the initiative to do something like that.

Very knowledgable

Helped me out with specific things in R studio for my statistics class. No rushing, and was able to explain what things meant so I was actually learning. Besides programming he explained the motivation behind certain statistical test.

Ethan, 2 lessons with Matthew

Matt was patient and explained mechanical operations preventing me from fully getting problems correct.

Matt is clearly knowledgeable and definitely precise in setting up problems so that I can clearly grasp the process of approaching problems correctly and following to completion. He is patient.

Really got a lot out of the lesson, conceptually

I was struggling with understanding the different properties of hypothesis testing formulas and Matthew really helped clarify things for me conceptually. He was able to help me see how it all connected and I got a lot of understanding in a very short amount of time.

Very knowledgable and great explanations

Very helpful and thorough with responses. Walks through examples and reassures your understanding which is extremely useful. Would 100% recommend in the future!

Great tutor

patient, understanding, and diligent. For anyone stuck on a certain subject, matt will patiently walk you through it, several times if needed, until the material sinks in.

Knowledgeable Tutor

Matthew was very patient with me and answered basic questions that I previously struggled with in R Studio. I am very grateful for his help and will be using him again.

Esther, 5 lessons with Matthew

Knowledgeable

Matthew was very helpful and patient. He helped me with an R coding project for my data analytics class. He tried to explain everything as we went along, and was very encouraging. I would highly recommend!

Problem Solving

Matt was an absolute life saver. He calmly helped me think outside the box. I feel confident about these problems now. I will seek out Matt again and againčî×
