My name is Javier. I am the Founder of LARS BURO NY, a research, design, and visualization studio based in NYC. I am eager to re-enter the academic world and share my experience and knowledge with architecture and design students. I graduated Magna Cum Laude in my Bachelor of Architecture at the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico, afterwards completing a Masters of Science in Advanced Architectural Design with recognition at Columbia University's GSAPP. For the past couple of years, I have been tutoring and counseling architecture students in everything from studio and thesis projects, to research papers, to design software basics and techniques. I take joy and pride in helping students overcome the many obstacles inherent to such demanding careers, making it easier for them to communicate and develop outstanding ideas. I have seen first hand, time and time again, how creative disciplines thrive on a culture of feedback, on testing ideas among peers, on effective critique and consulting, and the clarity brought by discussing and debating the intentions and methods of a project. But just as importantly, I too have experienced the same challenges and struggles that design students face at one point in their academic careers, and have always benefited from a helping hand and an outside eye. This is why I am committed to sharing these experiences and perspectives with those who want to push the boundaries of their projects, or those who just wish to expand their skill set.

I am fluent in Spanish and English, with excellent verbal and written communication skills, so bilingual students who struggle with communicating and redacting ideas are also welcome. Tutoring schedules can be arranged on a case by case basis.

I am proficient in the following design software:
AutoCAD, Sketchup, Rhino, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions and arrange what would be best for your specific needs!

Adobe InDesign,

Adobe InDesign

In my architecture studies I took a course in digital and print publication, where the primary software was Adobe InDesign. This program was used to design and organize pamphlets, texts, and portfolios to be printed, and published. With said software I designed my architecture portfolios to apply for graduate school, and consequently again to collect my graduate work into a final manifesto document. In my current position, Adobe InDesign is used in conjunction with Photoshop and Illustrator to design and compile project material into presentations and printed briefs.
Architecture,

Architecture

I am a Magna Cum Laude B.Arch graduate from the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico. Winner of the AIA Henry Adams Medal. Before graduating, I was the Student Council Representative for the Architecture School, and also the AIAS 5th Year Director. I have an MSc degree in Advanced Architectural design from the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation of Columbia University. There, I was awarded the Lowenfish Memorial Prize for final studio project, and the William Ware Prize for Excellence in Design/Saul Kaplan Travelling Fellowship.
Drawing,

Drawing

During my first two years as an architecture student, all of my design projects were represented using manual drafting, sketching, and rendering. My profession primarily relies on sketching and drafting to communicate ideas, and represent concepts. After college, I've had experience tutoring undergrad students with technical drawing, anatomy and landscape drawing, concept sketches, and vehicle design.
Graphic Design,

Graphic Design

In my professional education I was trained in graphic composition, typography, textures and colors, proportions, vector and raster graphics; all in a wide arrange of software and media, including but not limited to Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Bridge, as well as multiple 2D and 3D modeling programs. Professionally, I have been tasked with developing graphic templates, logos, and print material, for multiple companies in order to enhance and complement their marketing strategies.

AutoCAD,

AutoCAD

In my architecture courses I was trained for two years on AutoCAD drafting and software techniques. Professionally, I worked three years as a draftsman and later as an architectural designer, relying heavily on AutoCAD as the main 2D drawing software for drafting, project coordination, and design documentation. Years after forming my own design firm, AutoCAD is the most used software in all projects.

Sketchup,

Sketchup

Sketchup was the first 3D modeling software I was trained in as an undergrad. The entirety of the digital models developed in my architecture degree were developed in said software, including my first project in graduate school. My thesis project, a master plan developed to the detail, was designed using Sketchup; including multiple software enhancing plug-ins. In addition to having used Sketchup for years for its basic modeling purposes, I have also taken advantage of its open-source model warehouse, its solar analysis capabilities, its capacity to import terrains and coordinate-based mapping from Google Earth.

Skillful, Patient Tutor - Definitely Recommend

Javier is extremely knowledgeable. He graciously steered his direction in a way that focused on my individual goal. If I had scheduled more time with him, I'm confident we could have accomplished the project in a very short time. Truly grateful to have had the experience of working with him.

very detail oriented and patient

Javier is helping me out over this summer with teaching me Sketchup and later Rhino and Twin motion skills. His sessions are very helpful and the best part is he goes to explain details of every step which is super helpful. Highly recommend Javier!
