THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN (Global Studies)
Hi, I'm Juliana H., an 18 year-old Freshman at the University of Texas at Austin. In high school, I tutored students regularly in a range of subjects but am especially strong in language arts-related fields, as well as in public speaking. Students I've tutored previously have seen positive trends in both grades and confidence with subject matter. I am enthusiastic about helping students grow and reach their potential!
I come from a small town where I was involved in a large spectrum of activities which taught me lessons even deeper than those I learned in class. I am happy to tutor students in more than just areas they are graded in as I believe part of being a well-rounded student is being organized, having time-management, and participating in classes.
Though English is my strongest subject now, that has not always been the case. It took me years an lots of practice to become a talented writer and critical thinker. Because of this, I believe I can relate to kids who struggle in these areas and employ some of the tactics my teachers used to help me. By the time I got to high school, I had improved my reading and writing skills enough to score a 5 on the AP Language and Composition exam and a 4 on the AP Literature and Composition exam. I was also on a spelling and vocabulary team for the duration of high school as well as most of my primary school years which helped me develop my grammatical skills tremendously. I genuinely enjoy proofreading essays and helping students with their writings of any type. If you or your child need help with college essays, reading, developing writing skills, proofreading, or grammar lessons I feel confident that I can be a positive catalyst to their growth.
On the ACT and SAT, I am able to help with all subjects but am the most qualified in English and reading sections. I scored a 1990 on the SAT with a 630 Math, 650 Critical Reading, 710 Writing (11/12 essay). On the ACT, I scored a 31 composite (34 English, 30 reading, 30 Science, 28 Math) with a 35 in writing. These tests require not only intellect but strategy as well, and I am quite comfortable with both exams and strategizing for them as I am not far removed from the age of most students taking these exams.
Additionally, I am enthusiastic about public speaking and was a state-qualified debater three years in a row. I was also a member of the extemporaneous speaking team for my senior year of high school when I qualified for regionals. I truly enjoy public speaking and am glad to help students who need help with anything from learning to speak up more in classes to a specific speech class in which a student needs help writing and formatting speeches, as well as pointers on delivery.
All-in-all, I am patient and enthusiastic about helping students and believe I can positively impact students who need help. I have a fairly flexible schedule and am understanding that students have busy schedules that need work around. I encourage students of all ages to contact me and I will be glad to schedule a short consultation so that we can go over in depth what I, the student, and the student's parents believe is necessary to ensure a successful academic life! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
