My TEFL certification has given me a new appreciation for my love of exploring languages as bridges between communities of reality and meaning. Through the Paideia Institute for Humanistic Study, I can speak Latin and Ancient Greek in order to resurrect these languages of the Renaissance and intellectual exploration in the West. Education is such a precious opportunity that as my student, you will have my patience, compassion, and understanding. Learning is our goal and I will always keep that truth in mind.
Through the Council for International Educational Exchange, I completed 150 hours of coursework on intercultural competence, vocabulary building, lesson planning, and facilitating students to become autonomous learners. This training included a 20 hour practicum experience where I tutored students whose native languages were Mexican Spanish and Vietnamese.
My Classics and Latin majors from UT Austin have culminated in my senior thesis research project on Roman authors like Julius Caesar, Pliny the Elder, Cicero, and Livy. I am pursuing my fourth major in Ancient Greek in the spring of 2016.
Thank you for taking the time to learn about me. I would love to meet you and share my language learning strategies and joy. I believe language learning should be relaxing, fun, and ecstatic. As my student, I look forward to learning how you learn best and accommodating your specific needs and goals. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Classics was my first major from the University of Texas at Austin. Before University, I had taken all four years of Latin at Westside High School in Houston, TX. I participated in Junior Classical League and took the Latin AP exams in Language and Literature, scoring a 4 and 5, respectively. As an undergraduate, I studied abroad at the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies at Rome through Duke University. I completed my senior thesis on select Roman authors and how they promoted their identity through genre and engaging with the public imaginary. I have also participated in Paideia Institute's Living Greek in Greece program in both 2013 and 2016, as well as Living Latin in Paris in 2015. I am currently pursuing my fourth major in Ancient Greek at UT Austin for the 2017 school year.
I began Ancient Greek during senior year of high school as an independent study course with my Latin Teacher using the Athenaze textbook. As a Classics and Latin major at UT Austin, I am also 97% with a fourth major in Greek to be completed in 2017. I have participated in Paideia Institute's Living Greek in Greece program in both 2013 and 2016, and I plan to return because Greek is my love and heart. I have experience in lyric poetry, Homeric Greek, Herodotus, and a survey of authors from tragedy and philosophy. I am currently working through Plato's Symposium independently in order to prepare for my return to undergraduate study in Greek.
I majored in Classics and Latin at the University of Texas at Austin. I participated in Paideia Institute's Living Latin in Paris where I practiced speaking Latin as a living language in the Latin Quarter. I have studied abroad in Rome through the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies through Duke University. I studied in Greece for Classics and Living Greek in Greece. I am patient, compassionate, and understanding when it comes to learning a foreign language because I grew up in a bilingual household speaking both Vietnamese and English. My TEFL certification gives me a more modern perspective for learning Latin as a living language.
I am TEFL/TESOL certified through the Council of International Educational Exchange where I earned 150 hours in coursework, including a 20 hour practicum where I tutored students in English whose native languages were Mexican Spanish and Vietnamese. I am patient, compassionate, and understanding when it comes to foreign language learning because I grew up in a bilingual household speaking Vietnamese and English. My knowledge of Latin, Ancient Greek, and in this case, Spanish and Italian, would help me with this student because we can work together to bridge their preexisting knowledge to increasing their proficiency in English, depending on which skills on the TOEFL exam they need to improve on.
