About Kathy

I have worked as both a teacher and tutor and have served as the Director of a supplemental school. I am a University of Texas graduate with a BS in Elementary Education. I hold teaching certificates in 1st-6th grade General Education; 1st-8th grade Reading and ESL. In addition, I have a certificate in Jewish Education Specializing in Adolescents and Emerging Adults and am working towards a College Counseling Certificate from the UCLA Extension Program.

I believe that each child is gifted, and it is my job to discover those gifts and guide each student to use those gifts as a platform to build from. No student is the same, therefore, I work with each child as an individual, finding the methods that will help each student become an independent, motivated learner.

I love teaching elementary school math! Recently, I was brought into a local public elementary school to teach math to two classes that were not showing mastery of concepts or readiness for STAAR testing. After working with the classes two days per week for four months, all students passed district and state testing. More importantly, students enjoyed learning math concepts and were excited by math. I believe in making math hands on for my students; students must feel a connection to the concepts presented and understand how the concepts will be applicable in real life in order to truly understand and be motivated to learn math.

Reading is the gateway to all learning, and therefore, one of the most important skills that a student possesses. The ability to read exposes students to places, ideas and people beyond the scope of everyday life. My background in reading education gives me the ability to reach students where they are at, both in skill level and interests. I use a variety of methods and reading materials to help each student become a confident reader with the skills to use to be a successful learner with the hope that s/he will also find a passion for reading.

I have spent many years working in various capacities with elementary-aged students, both in and out of the classroom environment. I am passionate about developing my students' unique abilities and helping them to discover new strengths and techniques to continue to grow as individual, independent learners.

I have a BS in Elementary Education from UT Austin with a concentration in Reading. I have also completed Master's level Reading and Talent Development Courses at Texas State. I continue to learn on my own, with and from my students in order to support their learning in the way that suits them best.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have my BS in Elementary Education and over 25 years working in education

Elementary Math

I have worked as an elementary math interventionist for 3rd and 4th grade. I was brought into an elementary school to exclusively teach math to 40 students who were struggling to master grade-level concepts. After 4 months of focused math instruction, 98% of my students passed all district and state tests! I have taught 1st-3rd grade self-contained classrooms in which I taught math each day.

Handwriting

I am a certified classroom teacher with many years of experience in teaching handwriting. I have taught 1st-3rd grade handwriting using both print and cursive in addition to the D'Nealian method.

Homeschool

I am a certified elementary teacher with many years of classroom experience planning lessons in all subject areas. I hold a 1st-6th certificate in general studies, a 1st-8th grade certificate in reading and ESL certification. In addition, I have homeschool experience with one of my children.

Phonics

I have a BS in Elementary Education with a reading concentration from the University of Texas at Austin. I have been trained in a variety of methods to teach reading skills to 1st-8th grade students. I have experience teaching 1st-3rd grade and ESL students where phonics education was one of the skills used to teach beginning readers and with 4th and 5th grade where phonics was one of the strategies that I used with struggling readers.

Kathy has been working with our daughter for the past couple of weeks. Olivia has a renewed confidence in her work. She wants to read now and isn't thinking of it as a chore. Kathy quickly identified Olivia's issues with reading and began working on them. She is very prepared for all tutoring sessions, going as far as sending lesson plans to me the week of.
